Default More markings on the backs of T206s

Posted By: Chuck

Seems like this was discussed a month ago. I've listed some of the markings that I have on the backs of mine and wonder if anyone has any that match or can provide insight.

Large "WPC" stamped in purple ink

"C" stamped in purple ink

"1000" stamped in purple ink

"R.C.P" hand written at the bottom

"RBG" (the "G" is very light;could be an "S") that looks like it was typed. Also "83," about 1/2 inch below
another purple stamp that look like a logo made from two initials

"Collo.. and Cr.." "L.U.DUDLEY JR." stamped in red over the same thing stamped in purple but almost faded away

"JAN 27 1911" stamped in purple

"HOWE McCORMICK" " 00 W. Main St. Gainsville, FLA" stamped

"CPJ" handwritten in black ink. The cursive "J" could be a "T"

I've had a number over the years with a neatly inked "Elias" on the reverse. Think they're all gone though.

i think i mentioned this in a similar thread a while back. i read somewhere many years ago that F. Scott Fitzgerald was a huge baseball fan as a teen and his father would give him the baseball cards out of packs of cigarettes he smoked. F. Scott amassed a huge collection of them and stamped the back of each card with an old english style capital "f" in black ink. although i have never seen one, supposedly many of these are still in circulation because his daughter inherited them when he died and then sold his entire collection shortly afterward. if there are some still out there, i wonder if they would bring a premium? or maybe not since the mark would have to be denoted on the slab as a flaw (mk)?

Steve,

I have Elias written in ink on a couple of T206 cards myself.
Who is this Elias?
Anybody know? I've wondered for a long time.

best,

barry

Hello everyone,

I am actively attempting to catalog these particular stamps on the backs of T206's. If you have any in your collection, could you please send me a front/back scan or at least let me know which player/pose the stamp is on and the number of the stamp.

I know there are a lot of T206's here, so please help me out. I would be very thankful to anyone who could provide some input with this project.

Thanks,

Andy

Hey Joe..I think I solved one mystery. That last card you posted belonged to Russell Sewall.

I just took a look through my raw T206 cards and found some that have the following stamps on the back:

1. BERT G BRICKEN (stamp is in black ink, all block letters);

2. INSURCENT (stamp is in purple ink, all block letters);

3. Hugh Stillman (stamp is in purple ink, fancy cursive letters).

Regards,
Adam

Thanks Dave, That question has been bothering me for a long time. Now here's your mission Dave, if you chose to accept it. Find out about the life of Mr. Sewell. How old he was when he collected, who his father was, what he did for a living and when he passed. The only clue I give you is that he lived in the west. Good luck and this thread will self distruct in 10 seconds. 9, 8, 7.

I just picked up another T206 with Howe's name stamped on the back.

Somebody on the board was particularly interested in him but I can't remember who.

Hi Chuck,

I've seen a couple T206 cards that are stamped "Collect and Credit T. U. Dudley Jr."

I believe your card was owned by Thomas Underwood Dudley, Jr. of Louisville, Ky. He came from a family of nine children. Dudley, Jr. was the son of a noted Bishop and Confederate Civil War Major T.U. Dudley, Sr. who died in 1904. There's more info in the January 23, 1904 New York Times.

Here are three of the five I know I missed on eBay before I started my targeted collection. Also missed were a J.J. Clarke and a Waddell.
The first four all came from TnT Collectibles from suburban Pittsburgh.

Oh, heck, if you have any with Howe's backstamp, I'd like to hear from you.

edited to correct horrible spelling

Here's a red date stamp on one of my T206 cards which looks to be September 24, 1909. I do have a few others with other odd markings on the back so if I get a chance will post those as well.

Barry, I also have a few cards with Elias written on it and tend to recall one ebay seller who recently had several T206 cards up for sale with "Elias" written on the back. I have no idea of the history.

Has anyone considered documenting some of the stamp backs on the T206 cards? It would be a massive undertaking but would not be surprised if someone is already looking into this. I'd be very interested. Thanks.

When I bought this it was billed as having a toy town stamp...is it? Who knows. Sorry about the front scan...I don't know how that happened?!?!

Bump. Curious to see what happens as this thread is archived. Recently became interested in the subject again and then found this thread that I started in 2007.

Default As of yesterday, my total is up to 375

And know of 37 more with the stamp that aren’t with me. Just last week, five I didn’t know about became available and I was able to get four of the five.
