Dan- I'm not sure that the list is complete, but I'll bet you a milkshake you couldn't acquire that entire goup of cards in a lifetime. That's a who's who of N172 rarities.

Yeah Barry, I realized that when I went to Bobby's card pricer site and noticed that there are very few pictures of any of the Omaha players. I wonder why Omaha is so scarce? Sioux City players seem to pop up on ebay all the time - a much smaller city only 150 miles from Omaha. Perhaps I should shoot for a team set of Sioux City as it is a shared city with Nebraska.

I'll bet 2 milkshakes on the Flynn alone as I believe there are only 2 known.

Doran is no picnic either, and isn't the Walsh pretty rare too?

Doran is tough..been looking for a couple of years.
Walsh, I managed to find so I don't think it's that rare.

Jay- I won't take you up on that bet because I already have a cow (don't have a vibrator, though). Isn't the Walsh a bit tough, too? I know Alan said he found it but I thought it was a scarce card.

So does my question have an answer or is it just one of the many Old Judge mysteries?

I don't think the difference in rarity is an Omaha, Sioux City thing but rather a function of the year of issue. In the Old Judge set many of the true rarities are 1888 cards. Why, I don't know. I assume that with two different varieties coming out in 1888(different ad bottoms) ,and alot of new teams being added, there were glitches. The 1889 issue, forgetting the California League cards, tends not to have alot of rarities. Off the top of my head I believe that all Sioux City cards were issued in 1889. Omaha cards were issued in both 1888 and 1889, with the real rarities(Flynn, Doran) being 1888 cards.

Barry--Walsh is not scarce

Cool thread, sorry I missed it until all the questions were answered. As Jay and others pointed out, your player list is complete and of varying difficulty.

What I find strange with the Omaha team is the fact that none of the 1888 Omaha poses are found in 1889 as Omaha cards. Two players, Jimmy Cooney & John Messitt are found in both years with Omaha but their 1888 poses were not re-issued in 1889. Instead different new poses appear in 1889. As has been shared, the ~half of the poses that fall into the 1888 catagory are not easy, some extremely difficult. The 1888 cards are all of the Fb style (Cartophilic nomenclature) just like the Maroons and other cards I like to collect

Omaha, an interesting Old Judge team to collect, from unknowns to HOFer Nichols, from easy to near impossible.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski
