I was going through a book called "South Street, A Maritime History of New York" and I found something interesting. As most of you know Old Judge cards were issued with cigarettes produced by Goodwin & Co. The address that the company resided at during that period in the late 1880s was "the foot of Grand Street East River New York". In the book that I was looking at they had an appendix in the back that provided an 1852 directory, by address, of all companies residing on South Street. On 153 South Street, close to the East River, just south of where the Brooklyn Bridge would be built, was E. Goodwin and Brother and W. H. Goodwin who were listed as Tobacconists. I have no proof but I would guess that this was the seed from which Goodwin & Co sprouted. The later address of Goodwin & Co. on Grand and the East River was just north of this address along the eastern coast of Manhattan.

And the Joseph Hall studios, which took many of the photographs, was on Fulton Street in Brooklyn, just a short walk from the Brooklyn Bridge. Their proximity could have made them obvious partners in producing the cards.

Not too much to add to the history of Goodwin but I don't think their Dogshead brand was very well received.....I have seen several promotions for the Dogshead brand but don't think they ever took off in popularity. At least the cabinets are very scarce.....

It's the Goodwin Issues- Games and Sports Series (50)...there were 4 baseball scenes/generic players in the set.

So is there more evidence of this Joseph Hall / Goodwin proximity being a genisis of individual baseball cards??

With the wording on the back of the trade card "a photo of every player" on "any team" can we extrapolate from that there are Old Judge cabinets out there of players that are not on the N172 checklist? Buffalo or more Rochester players, for example? Does anyone have uncatalogued cabinets?

Joe--Goodwin was loose with their wording. They published lists of players that could be ordered so there were limits. However, there are several players on those lists who do not have a known N172 or N173.
