Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am trying something different. I just want to build decent sets (no beaters)and enjoy putting them together simply for the fun of it, and I feel like VG will work. I want to complete the sets I start in a timely manner and stay within the bounds of my budget, and I believe dropping down some grade wise and not obsessing over every little common will help.
