I had a lot of fun with the 2003 SCBC cover's dog theme and have had lots of good response. I'd like to invite members of this group to suggest a cover theme for next year's book. Our format requires three cards on front . . . one of a currently hot player, one of a really vintage (pre-WWI or so) player and one from the 1950s or 1960s. We need another card on the spine and from three to five on the back. Ideally all would follow a single theme. The person or persons who come up with a "winning" theme get the dubious honor of having their cards pictured on the book, a photo credit, etc. Let's have some fun with this and see what develops!

Not too far off, Jay. In the picture, Henry's wearing a ferret collar. When I took him to the pet store, even the cat collars were too big

Owners of Golden Retreviers and Great Danes can laugh at Henry all they want, but I'd rather walk barefoot through my back yard then theirs.

I have two English Bulldogs and I can relate to the back yard/front yard/side yard/occasionally hallway arguement.

Bob,

Since Tim Salmon is so popular since the World Series, why not go with a fish theme:

Some Modern Tim Salmon Card
1952 Topps Dizzy Trout
1887-89 Old Judge George Haddock

I don't own any of these cards, but they shouldn't be that tough to find.

Just a thought

let's see, Sean GREEN is hot right now, you could have a Joe BLACK card (49 Bowman, perhaps), and an Old Judge card of a Chicago Maroon -- maybe even a St. Louis White!

And more: lots and lots of "Browns," people named Gray and a team named the "Grays" ... and of course the red stockings, red legs, red sox, and reds, and all of the corresponding whites.

any way to get a maroon card on the cover! (I've got one, but it's ugly. better look elsewhere)

i think jay is right, larry corcoran should be on the cover, then you can use a carlton fisk rookie(close enough to 60's) and a barry bonds card from now, then i would probably buy 2 copies or if you actually used one of my larry corcoran cards(or all of them if you want) id probably buy all the copies.

also just for Bill Cornell, you should put a t204 Tom Reilly on the back or side, because i know he likes that card

1. some modern insert card with Ichiro & Sasaki that says "stars of japan" or something (like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1582036366 , for instance)

2. old judge Germany Long
(or card of germany schaefer)

3. topps/bowman dutch leonard

others:
-frenchy bordagaray
-irish meusel
-tolstoi "russian" mouthpiece cigarettes
-ramly "turkish blend"
-a minor league card of a Vancouver "Canadian"
-T206 Phil Poland
-I seem to recall there were negro leaguers named "panama," and maybe "cuba" too...of course there are some cuban cards.
-and there is the score american flag card...
-and a "Texas Tommy" card, because we all know TX is another country...

Hi All
Everyone on this board has a great imagination, as well as too much time to think about these issues.
I think they should put the 5 best looking cards of alltime on the cover, with the first being a 66 topps card of DON MOSSI, a true male super model.
later brian

sensors. I've heard good AND bad about the dogs (as cute as they are). Maybe something more general, like "great left-handed pitchers," "right-handed pitchers" "sluggers" "shortstops"--stuff like that--you'd have great cards to choose from and a semi-theme. Or great Dodgers, Yankees (or old name), Athletics, Red Sox (or Stockings), Reds (by any other name as well), Cubs (ditto), White Sox (also by any other name)--unfortunately, if you're going to need a card from way back, the Twins faction around here is REALLY going to get upset (unless they don't mind being called Washington). Again, you'd really have your choice of cards. And you want the cards to knock your sox off! How about the previous year's World Series participants? Can't take a bad picture of Eckhart! Or Bonds...

In other words, more boring ideas will yield better cards!

Frankly I don't like ANY of the suggested themes, except the international one isn't bad--but are there really great cards of all those people? You have to consider the cards as well as the names.

I'm really glad you did the 'dog" theme--that Old judge card is great. Giambi is nice, too.

Gee, too bad Tejada doesn't have a dog, heh, heh.

I'm assuming from Bob Lemke's silence that the first choice (Henry on cover) is the picked choice-- and that any subsiquent comments to the contrary from Bob are merely so that they rest of you don't feel bad about your 'honorable mentions.' .... And, Bob, just in case you start to waiver, Henry's had some feelers from Beckett.

Maybe the theme should be "Cards that Julie Likes"

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you were not trying to be offensive, but in my opinion, your post comes off that way. Bob basically asked us to brainstorm some ideas, be creative, and follow a given format. Many of us did that. I don't remember him asking for anyone's opinion whether or not they like ANY of the ideas. It would impossible to pick cards that knock your sox off, like you suggest. Everyone one has different tastes, and someone may dislike a particular card that happens to blow you away. And who really buys the book based on the cards on the cover anyway?

I haven't thought it through entirely and come with all the cards yet but how about one featuring players with beards, mustaches and the like.
Many old judges and A & G's subjects sport those wonderful handlebar mustaches (maybe on Ward, Keefe or Old Hoss)and Harry Wrights beard is certainly memorable on his 1880 photo cards.
Contemporary beards could include: McGwire's Cardinal cards and Giambi's A's cards (before he sold it along with his soul to ...).
I'm not sure about our options for the 50's-60's cards though... (haven't looked at them lately..)
In the 70's you've got the A's led by the imimicable Rollie Fingers.

I like the moustache/beard idea. The best moustache I've ever seen on a vintage card is O'Rourke's on his Kalamazoo Bats card. I can provide a scan if Bob needs it. A Rollie Finger's card with his moustache would also be great.

Like Adam's idea of the error cards- isn't that the purpose of the book, to be able to tell the rare from the common (like Baker/Bakep, Herrer/Herrera, Magee/Magie, etc)

He didn't say they had to be rhyming words, or each from a different country, or fish, or ANYTHING ELSE! I was trying to say that the more specific the theme, the poorer card choice you have, because you're working so hard to get cards that fit the THEME> And you're dead wrong about people not being able to agree on great cards. Look at the lists we've put up from time to time. Many of the same cards appear on most. And even if your Number 1 choice was only my number 3 or 4 choice, so what?

WHY DOES EVERYONE ALWAYS THINK I'M THE BAD GUY? I DIDN'T see getting good cards for any of those themes, so I said so. I diodn't put forth one single CARD, so how can you say it has to be, for me "cards that Julie Likes."

WHY ARE YOU ALL ALWAYS JUMPING DOWN MY THROAT WHEN MY IDEAS DON'T CORRESPOND TO YOURS?

Here's a general--but more specific--theme: World Series teams players from last year, 40 years ago, and over 100 years ago (maybe you'd have to stick to the 20th century to TECHNICALLY have a world series), but several years in the 1800s, two teams went at it pretty good at the end of the season, from the N.L. and the AA.

I just don't understand why you guys always think I'm trying to be nasty! O.K. Pick one of your WONDERFUL ideas, and come up with 5 or 6 WONDERFUL cards! Bet you can't!

Sorry--maybe I'm all wet. I'd love to see a good theme with good cards. It just seemed to me that we were straining too hard over the theme. More power to you if you can do it!

of course for modern players--but there's Eckersly! I was thinking of Clenmens when he doesn't shave, and a lot of other guys too--come to think of it, little beards are really in with the As--don't the Yankees have a rule about no facial hair (how does Clemens get away with it?) Yeah, hair's O.K. with me.

But, see, that's a lot more general than fish, or specific countries, or different ways of spelling Paige...which is all I was saying. More general: better cards.

HAIR RULES!
