Default 1914 Baseball Blankets?

Posted By: Dan Mathewson

Anyone ever heard of these 1914 B-18 Baseball Blankets before? This is new to me...

Any idea what their dimensions are? Who made them? Are they for real? Check out the link to this auction site and look at the item. Kinda interesting, I don't see Christy listed, tho...

They are legitimate and fairly common. 5-1/4" square, felt pieces. No Mathewson. They were sold wrapped around tobacco products. You will see them often on eBay. There are often color variations for each player, with some variations being expensive

They are inexpensive relative to cards (ala T206s). They were intended to be sewn together to make make large quilts (blankets), and you will occasionally find old quilts or pillow cases that incorperate these felts with related tobacco silk and felt items.

Well, almost cool. I guess there's no Mathewson (what a bunch of felt-square blanket making losers for NOT including Christy in their quilts.) The gall!

I was thinking about bidding on them, but not now!

There! That's for the guy who excluded Christy!

Thanks for the tips, tho, Network 54 peoples. I love this board. So darned many of ya know so much about this stuff, I love it.

B18 is a strange set. Ten teams have players in the set, while 6 others do not. A number of HOFers were playing for teams which appear in the issue, yet those players don't have a blanket - Sam Crawford, Nap Lajoie, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Johnny Evers, Rube Marquard, Tris Speaker.

It is a very cool set though... and other than the Jackson and Cobb, one that you can put together fairly reasonably both in terms of time and money. My advice to anyone interested in this set is just to collect one of each player and don't bother with the color variations... although that's just one man's opinion.

Jeff

with no stains. This blanket really captures Johnson well, and the white background and base-path colors are a very nice example of this issue. Some of the B18's don't look much like the players. Another one I really like is Gibson.

Christy wore those velore PJ's with the booties and trap door to bed so he was not in need of a blanket. You know, the one's with the plastic on the bottom of the booties so you would not slip while running on a wood floor! Incidently, I refused to take out the trah or cut the lawn today and my wife, who is a redhead looked much like your icon when I asked for some dinner tonight!

Don't tell me Johnson is YET ANOTHER W0RD FOR...

I have a friend named Hazel Peter. Also her husband Britt, and children Maya, Alex and A.J. are my friends. Once I called, and a strange voice answered, "Hello?" "I want a Peter!" I said. "Boy have you got the wrong number," she answered.
