Hey guys. After seven (7) days without power I finally got my power on.

My front porch collapsed and I lost my entire gutter system. But after driving around my neighborhood I feel fortunate that I didn't lose more.

Fortunately, I have a wood-burning stove that I used for heat and to heat canned foods.

Now we have a Nor Easter to deal with. I hope everyone stays safe.

Hey Chris
Glad to hear you are back up and running and were not as affected as some others. Here is hoping everyone else gets back to normalcy as soon as possible.

Right now it's snowing in NY and the snow is sticking. And we're due for 50 MPH winds in a couple of hours. I feel terrible for the people who don't have appropriate shelter because of the hurricane. Now they're getting hit again.

I am on the Jersey Shore and that snow yesterday was heavy. We had power lines laying on the street due to the heavy snow.

My kudos to the JCP&L workers on the ground who have spent long hours dealing with dangerous situations.

My purchasing a wood burning stove ten years ago was the best investment I ever made, too. Heat, light and I can cook on it.

I had those snow "bombs" all day today.

I drove past Deal Lake (my favorite lake to fish) in Asbury Park and was awestruck by the devastation. I got very emotional seeing the destruction.

But, of course, it's the people that I feel for most. Families who lost loved ones; homes destroyed. It's all very emotional when you are right next to the families that have been affected. We will recover.

If you live in the tri-state area and weren't affected, then consider yourself fortunate and lucky. I lost power for a total of nine (9) days, lost a front porch and my gutter system and consider myself "lucky."

I lost five trees yesterday close to the house, plus many more in the woods with this newest storm after losing four big trees during the hurricane. Guessing they were weakened, then broke from the weight of the snow. Lost power for 15 hours after going just over five days without it during the first storm. Definitely not a fun last ten days and I am one of the really lucky ones here in NJ. Not a single thing damaged, amazing with all the stuff we have here.

During last year's hurricane, we had one tree on the entire property fall, hit my dad's old pickup truck parked way on the back of the property, although the tree took the worst of the clash. 1984 Dodge Snow Commandos are apparently tough trucks

Sorry for the late response, been off for a bit- I'm glad you are safe and back on the board. I can't imagine what everyone back there is going through, all I can say is stay strong and consider moving to Las Vegas No hurricanes here, just 3 to 4 months of extreme heat........

Glad you are ok my friend ...

Default Just getting back

Hey guys,

Hope you don't mind me joining the thread.

Breezy Point, where I lived, is a peninsula at the end of the Rockaways [Queens, NY], the Atlantic on one side, Jamaica Bay on the other. The entire peninsula was totally submerged under 4-6 feet of water by Sandy. All basements were completely flooded and 90% of all homes had the ocean flowing through their first floors. Hundreds of homes washed off their foundations. Worse than that, 111 homes were immolated by fire, incredibly burnt down to the ground, with only a few chimneys remaining. I choke up now thinking of those heroic volunteer firemen who battled the blaze through the night of the storm. Somehow, they contained it, else the whole Point could've been gone. Miraculously, no one died.

Gotta go now, but it's good to have had this outlet.
I feel a little bit ... better.

Thanks.

Doug

Default I raise my arm to Sandy and kindly flip her the bird!

Back up and running after 12+ days with no power. We had no cell/4G service for 5 days, no cable, internet or landline phone for 7 days. We had a 200+ year old oak tree come down in our front yard. Thankfully it fell in the perfect spot. It was big enough that it could have hit any one of three houses (including mine), and if it had it would have crushed them. We have a generator and a wood burning stove so we were at least able to stay home (and warm) through it all. We were lucky considering what a lot of people are going though down the shore, and in some parts of NYC/Long Island.

Doug, my heart goes out to you and all of Breezy Point. So many horrible photos and stories coming out of that neighborhood. Stay strong.

Johnny, Doug, Vincent, and everyone else- we are praying for you all. I wouldn't wish this upon anyone, for any reason. Stay strong and if at all possible check on elderly or handicapped neighbors who couldn't leave. Sometimes they have no one....

Default Update--

I don't get much time for the internet these days, and the one time I did update on Net54, I mistakenly replied to the email notification--which went to Leon instead of the thread--so I suppose it got trashed.

My own house got clobbered--about 6" of water on the first floor, basement totaled, foundation undermined--I got a yellow [Restricted Use] sticker on the house.

I got an electrician to sign off [fortunately, my panel was above water] and got back much of my electricity the other day, and I've had cold water [can't drink it but at least can flush] for a week or so, so I've basically moved back in. It sure beats the 3-4 heavy traffic hours I was doing on the road between Jersey and Breezy everyday for a month.

Hoping to get gas back before the pipes freeze.
FEMA's Rapid Recovery, which is going to replace my boiler and hot water heater, is working on neighborhoods at a time.
I have to say that people and the government have been great. I avail myself of the Fire Department free lunch almost everyday, and am grateful to Operation Blessing in particular, which twice sent over a troop of a dozen volunteers to help me out with the basement.

I just got my last T206 for awhile from Ralph Preyer--the Southern Leaguer, Hickman--it had been floating around in the mail for over a month. That puts me at 491 or 492. I'd been aiming to get to 500 by the new year, but the Monster is going on hold for now. That'll give me something to look forward to, anyway.

I'll be back.

Doug

Doug
Thanks for the update Doug. I hope you get your gas on before the low temps. I'm also glad to hear good reports about the people and the gov. helping out. I'm sorry you (and everyone else) had to go through this, I admire your positive attitude while recovering from such a disaster. Thanks again for keeping us posted; and congrats on the Hickman !!!

Sincerely, Clayton
