Default SGC Grading Refusal - Question

Posted By: Cobby33

I purchased the following off of eBay not long ago (sorry I don't have image to cut and paste, so here's the link--now you all know how much I probably overpaid):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8733440344&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

I sent it in to SGC, who sent it back as "authentic" but unslabbed with a note saying they couldn't grade, something to the effect that they can't grade proofs?

Does anyone know if this is in fact a proof and who would grade/slab it?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

They are technically not proofs, they are just missing several steps in the color process. Maybe if you explain that to them they might give it another look. Some other board member may have experience submitting these.

well that's funny I have five cards from the e-97 set in B/W which are clearly labeled by SGC as "proofs"! And no,they are not in first generation holders either~

Cobby,

If you think you overpaid, just shoot me an e-mail with what you want for it at a mild profit. Seriously. Cool card. I hope I am not breaking any rules. Let me know.

Damian

SGC knows nothing about proof's, or Vintage cards.
They're great with corners and sides.

They were Intimidated by the cards description.

To show that I'm not being bias, or picking on a grading company .... PSA and GAI are also masters of corners and sides.

Having said that, -- they are very important in the Card Flipping Business.

At most they would slab it as authentic.

The card is cool, but it is a freak. They can look at its corners, edges, and surface, but how can they measure printing quality? Presumably, they grade downward from what a perfect specimen would look like. What do they subtract for the missing color? Should they have a policy of giving cards with missing colors an SGC 10-poor, treating it like a pinhole or paperloss? Would you want an SGC 10 for that card?

If you just want it SGC slabbed, I'm confident you could coax them to slab it AUT, but I can't see how they could give it a grade higher than 10, which grade certainly would not enhance the card's value.

edited to be the kinder, gentler moderator.....SGC is the best grading company for vintage cards, imo. If anyone wants to buy ungraded or graded it's always their choice......good luck to all

For most buyers and sellers of proofs and scraps, an AUTH from SGC or PSA would be fine, in particular as these cards are often handcut. I don't think there is anything value-lowering in an AUTH grade. For a standard T206, people might wonder about an AUTH grade, but for an unusual card like this they will understand.
