Default 1911 season preview from "The Book of Baseball"

In the spring of 1911, P. F. Collier & Son published an elaborate, heavily illustrated coffee-table sized book called "The Book of Baseball". It includes a history of the game up to that point, chapters on "The Art of Pitching", "Making a Championship Club", and "Chasing the Pennant", profiles of star players, a 5-page overview of the 1910 major league season, overviews and histories of all the minor leagues, and a 17-page team-by-team preview of the 1911 season, which had just started as the book went to press. There are photographs on every page, except a few pages that just have drawings or cartoons. Unfortunately, I don't have an original copy of this book, but I do have the Dover reprint edition of 2010, which is great.

Below is the last chapter of the book, the team-by-team preview of the 1911 season. As you can see, lots of players from T206 and T205 are prominently featured, as is an unknown rookie named Joe Jackson on p. 155. The only photo in this chapter that was used for T206 is the one of Dots Miller of the Pirates (unless I'm missing one), but lots of photos elsewhere in the book were used for T206, T205, and various caramel sets. (Maybe also T207, but I didn't immediately notice any.) There are also a surprising number of nice-looking action photos.

Here is the review of the 1910 season, with a bunch of portraits that were used on T205s around the time this book was published. The Lajoie, Ford, Jennings, Johnson, and Collins pictures were taken by Paul Thompson.

Dave, this is incredible, thanks for sharing! I bought a copy right away after looking at a few pages. Can't wait to get it.

David,

That is so awesome. Being a fan of the T206 set the content of these pages really hits home in a wonderful way. I am going to pick up a copy of the reproduction as you mentioned.

Thank you very much for taking the time to scan and post all of those pages.

Respectfully,

Derek
