Default Can You Identify This Card???

Posted By: Brad Green

Hello!

I am new to network54 and have enjoyed reading all of the threads. I thought that maybe someone could help me identify a card. I bought the Lefty Grove card below from Empire State Sports a few years ago. Bob Bostoff referred to the card as a 1929 R316 Mini. The card measures 1 3/4 by 2 3/4 and is an identical replica of the traditional 1929 R316. The card has the same picture, print, and facsimile autograph as the R316. The card has a blank back. The card appears to be a strip card, as you can see the border of another card at the left side.

Has anyone seen these cards before? Does anyone know the year of these cards and if they have a designation other than "R316 Mini"?

Thanks!

Brad

And I believe these were just recently catalogued (or maybe not, my SCD is 2002 - need a new one!). Anyways, they are pretty darn rare. The close cut on the sides is typical as well, from the ones I've seen. I know of a few board members who have them. I'm lucky enough to own one myself, a Hack Wilson. Nice card!

edited to add: does anyone know why these are deemed "candy" cards? Everything about them screams "w-series" to me.

Thanks, Ben! I found the cards listed on pages 218-219 of the 2004 Edition of the SCD Standard Catalog of BBC.

This does look like a strip card. The Leader Novelty nonsports cards I've seen from that era came as part of a candy box, which may be why this card, being from the same company, picked up that association.

is found on Lefty's:

1928 Star Player Candy
1929 Anonymous Exhibit 4/1 w/ Gehrig, Cochrane and Donahue
1929 Leader Novelty Candy Co.
1929 R316
1929 R316 5x7 Glossy
1929 W553
1930 W554
1931 W517
1931 W517 (Mini)

That makes nine cards that this image was used on. That makes this a slightly over-used image, but I guess they didn't have too many pictures to use at the time...

Pictures of these cards can be seen on my website:
