Default Do scans make the sale on ebay?

Posted By: Bob

I was just wondering about the huge benefits of a great scan on ebay as I saw an E98 Bridwell with serious back damage in ungraded condition go over the $200 mark and appear headed upward and beyond. My cards tend to look like they have been scanned through an aquarium, even with the addition of a new scanner. Count me in as one who thinks the scans really make a card price take off.

You definately get stronger bids when people know what they are bidding on. I alwats post large, clear scans. Being able to host your own pics is use benefit too since you are not restricted on the size of the pic.

While it is true that bad scans can ruin an auction, there may be times when no scan is better than a true scan in terms of final sale value. You might turn more people off with a bad crease through Cobb's head if you show it to your potential bidders, rather than just describe it. Sometimes a good scan of the front with no scan of the back might warranted if the back is worse in the photo than a simple description like "paper loss on reverse." Sometimes people with bad photos or no photos do better than if they had a clear scan. It's really the same as advertising anything. There is a reason cereal companies have pictures of their cereal on the box, without showing you a window through which you could clearly see what the cereal looks like.

That being said, I always try to show clear scans of the front and backs of my cards for sale. I just figure I'll get less post-sale grumpiness from buyers if they have a clear idea what they're getting. But

I have serious doubts about any seller that won't show good detail in the card. Omitting a picture is deceptive at best. Granted, there are a number of people that buy the slab, but most of us buy the card, and without a good clear scan, you may as well be buying a piece blank cardboard.

You want to get top dollar for your card, but at the same time, omitting scans and providing fuzzy scans is the realm of scam and con artists, not good businesspeople.

I don't know about anyone else, but it annoys me to have to ask a seller for a better scan, or scan of the back that they aren't showing.

I've never used a scanner but with the low prices of quality digital cameras, I'd have to think that's the way to go. My pics are almost too detailed. The tiniest flaws look huge and people who may never notice a tiny spot see it enlarged ten times, clear, and may stay away.

When scanning, I have found it very useful to use a dark background behind the card that I am scanning. It cuts down on any glare and you get a very nice scanned image. You can then crop out the background if you choose to using a photo editor program, but this is not necessary.
