Default OT: John Montgomery Ward

Took my grandson for a driving lesson at Greenfield Cemetery in Nassau Co NY. Came across John Montgomery Ward's grave. Fairly modest stone. Visited HOF this past weekend and there he was again.

A chance to display two of my favorite cards of Ward, his classic N28 and the round album page. The round album just doesnt get enough attention these days.

Great stuff, guys. Astonishing signature, Jay.

I've sold 6 cards I've later regretted, and then I've bought back one of them. One of those regrets was a Ward Old Judge card, nice corners and a clear dark image. I had gotten him with thoughts of putting together a group of cards of HOF players who had a law degree. Ward was a thorn for some of the owners, Ward would try to help players to stick together and get management to threat players fairly. Ed Reulbach drew similar ire when he was a founding member of the Baseball Players Fraternity. He played less and was traded at that time. Ward was an intelligent fellow. I didn't realize his wife lived into the 1960s.

Thanks for starting this thread, Buzz.

Default John Ward Old Judge

Captin John Ward.Unfortunately the Foxxing is a distraction. But happy to have any OJ HOF with such a sharp clear picture. My oldest Ward item is this 1882 Scorecard with him playing for Providence NL.
Ward played for Providence for 5 seasons mostly as a pitcher. Winning 47 games in 1878. In 1892 he was second fiddle to Hoss Radbourne but still won 19 games.pitched until 1884 then reinvented himsel with speed. He stole 111 bases in a single season with the Giants. NY was where he found team success, 88 and 89 NL champs. In 94 He played in the First Temple cup winning over Baltimore.

Wow, the widow lived to see his induction. I don't recall ever seeing any letters from her addressed to autograph collectors. You'd think she would have been hounded by a few of the usual suspects from back then, much like the widows Ruth, Mathewson, McGraw, et al.
