If you are not currently a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, you may want to order the Spring 2010 issue of their member magazine, Memories and Dreams.

In this issue there is an excellent story on the work of Carl Horner, the legendary baseball photographer. To learn more visit

My copy of Memories and Dreams arrived today. The article is more about Honus Wagner and Cy Young than it is about Horner but it is still of interest. Keep in mind that their target audience is baseball fandom at large and not specifically the vintage card collecting community. It's also worth noting that the Hall of Fame will be doing an exhibit this spring on cards and photography.
The HOF magazine is kind of like National Geographic in that they don't take a stand on controversial issues. Nonetheless they occasonally do a piece that is of great interest and right up the alley of collectors, for instance an entire issue devoted to the Negro Leagues a couple of years ago. I would not be without my subscription to M&D and Old Cardboard and I recommend both mags to all of you. Tell 'em Groucho sent you.

That's a good question. I wonder myself. Dating the W600s sometimes gets tricky. Tom Shieber who wrote the article is Senior Curator at the Hall of Fame. I suppose one could write research@baseballhalloffame.org and ask him.

If I'm not mistaken, I think Lipsett sold the photographs before that. Sorry no link. I think I still have the catalog if someone needs it.

For starters - the uniform was unique to 1902. So - I guess the implication is it was taken in 1903 prior to the season.
