Default 1952-60 Uncut Topps Sheets

Posted By: Dave Hornish

This is prompted by something I read in the Non Sports Bible (the 1957 Topps Hit Stars listing) and I have made a similar post on the Non Sports Board. The NSB mentions the uncut sheet for this set (of 88) had an 11 by 11 uncut sheet array, resulting in 121 cards. I have wondered about this myself from time to time as it was thought 1957 (and possibly 58, 59 and 60 as well) Topps baseball were on this size sheet. My question is though, does anyone have a sheet or photo of an 11 x 11 card sheet that shows all 4 outer gutters (edge borders). The reason I ask is that every Topps baseball sheet I've seen from 1957 that is 121 cards is always missing a gutter and I believe them to be partial at 121 cards. But to be certain a full sheet from 1957 needs to be sighted. I do not have full sheets scans of any Topps baseball set from 1957-60 so need some help.

What's known to me is the large Topps baseball cards (3 3/4" x 2 5/8) from 1953-54 were printed on 100 card sheets (likely a 200 card full press sheet sliced in half to yield two 100 card uncut sheets). 1952 Topps is believed to have been printed on a 100 card sheet but only 25 card quadrants have been found, although they line up in a 10 x 10 configuration so are almost conclusively from a 100 card sheet as 53 and 54 were. 1955 Topps is believed to be a 110 card sheet and 1956 is confirmed at 110 cards on the sheet. It all changes in 1957 of course and I know that in 1961 the BB card sheets were 132 cards. None of the smaller card sheets true up to the 110 card one so they likely did not just adapt the old 110 size:

Large Card Sheet 10 x 11 = 1,155 sq in
Small Card Sheet 12 x 11 = 1,082.8125 sq in
Small Card Sheet 11 x 11 = 1,058.75 sq in

Does anyone has a scan of a full 11 x 11 from 57-60 as I cannot find an image of a full, 4 gutter sheet from this timeframe in any of my records, which admittedly are a little incomplete. Maybe Topps had an interim sheet size for 57 and a little bit thereafter?

Here's a scan of a 56, 57 and then a 61 sheet. The 61 has the 4 edge gutters, the 57 is obscured by the mat so you can't tell and the 56 is the last year of the big cards:

Those are beautiful sheets. Don't know anything about them but the best thing is you dont have to worry about the cards being trimmed. Beautiful items.
