Default Red Cobb - 26 diff backs....your favorite T206 Cobb is ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

The T206 Ty Cobb (red portrait) must be the most available T206 subject. And, this is understandable,
as it was printed with at least 25 different backs.

Here is a list of these backs in their scarcity ranking....as I've seen them in 26 years of collecting T206's.
Others might differ with this ranking....and, that's fine....anyhow, what are your inputs on this....and, do
you have any new backs to report ?

The scarcest..........

Brown LENOX
Broad Leaf 460
DRUM
Red HINDU
UZIT

Next scarcest group....

American Beauty 350 (frame)
Carolina Brights
Cycle 460
El Principe de Gales
Black LENOX
Piedmont 460 Fac. 42
Sovereign 460

Moderately tough...........

Cycle 350
OLD MILL
Piedmont 460 Fac 25
Sovereign 350
Sweet Cap 350 Fac 25
Sweet Cap 350 Fac 30
Sweet Cap 460 Fac 25
Sweet Cap 460 Fac 30
Sweet Cap 460 Fac 42

I was just wondering a couple days ago how many different backs the red Cobb had, & then I see your post. Thanks for posting! I don't own a single one, but any one of them is currently at the top of my wantlist.

edited to add that I've recently realized the beauty of T206's & how fascinating all the back varities are. I may be a little slow, but I get there eventually!!!

Ted,

I believe the six superperints (and hence Cobb Red) are available with SC 460/30.

They may also be possible with AB 460 and Brown Lenox.

Thanks for the additional two backs.....I will include them in the appropriate grouping on the list.
I posted this Thread in response to two identical inquiries (on the Red Cobb) from Net54er's. As
I greatly value your opinion.....how close is my subjective ranking of the different backs for this
Cobb ?

2nd question - since you mentioned the 6 Super Prints, can you explain why the Evers (Chi-bat)
is considerably tougher than the other five with respect to the scarcer backs ?

I am adding the Brown LENOX to the list per Scot Reader's suggestion. If this "baby" ever shows up........
it will rival the Red Cobb with a Ty Cobb back, in order of scarcity.

Incidently, I just can't add the Ty Cobb back to this list of Red Cobb's. Some would say he is a "T206"....
while others will say not.....there is no certainty.

Ted,

I think you are pretty close on the order; although I think

Piedmont 460/25
Sweet Caporal 350/30
Sweet Caporal 460/30
Sweet Caporal 460/42 OP

are less difficult than

Cycle 350
Old Mill
Sovereign 350
Sweet Caporal 460/25
Sweet Caporal 460/42

Hey guy....what took you so long....my bets were that you would chime in by early this morning in response

I hope yow realize that the Cobb on display here is the front of the one you favor.

No debate here Jim......the Ty Cobb backed card is a unique and very "mystical" card and here's wishing we
find out its true origin someday in the not too far off future.

There is no mistaking the Red Cobb with the Ty Cobb back from the front......

His hair is more blonde and his eyes are a clear blue......

And, are there any other subtle identifying differences from the regular Red Cobb,
with respect to the front ?

The Red Cobb with its 26 different backs (or 27, if Jim is correct) was printed with far more backs
than any other T206 in this respect.

Cobb is the "king" of the Six Super Prints. The five other ones are.....

Diff. Backs
_________

19............Mathewson (dark cap)
18............Chance (portrait-yellow)
18............Chase (portrait-blue)
17............Chase (dark cap)
16............Evers (bat-yellow sky)

And, the following 350/460 Series cards are available with many diff. backs.....note how often you
see these Subjects on ebay or at shows (relative to other T206's).

Diff. backs
_________

17............Baker
17............Bender (No trees)
17............Burch (fldg)
16............Cobb (bat off)
18............Downey (bat)
15............Doyle (bat)
18............Elberfeld (fldg-Wash)
17............Griffith (bat)
17............Jennings (dancing)
16............Jennings (one hand)
18............Johnson (pitching)
15............Jordan (bat)
15............Joss (pitching)
15............Konetchy (glove low)
16............Manning (pitching)
15............Mullin (bat)
17............O'Leary (hands on knees)
17............Reulbach (no glove)
16............Seymour (throwing)
15............Stahl (glove)
15............Street (fldg)
16............Willetts

Ted,

Putting aside the Cobb Back, why do you think the other five superprints were printed with fewer T206 backs than Cobb Red? I have always thought these six subjects could be found with a common set of backs.

I think the answer to your excellent question is written in the BB encyclopedia.

Cobb batted a league-leading .377 and drove in 100+ runs in 1909.....helping Detroit to win the AL pennant.

Note also in the list, the Detroit subjects printed with a large variety of backs....a 2nd Cobb in the 350/460
series, Jennings (dancing), Jennings (one hand), Mullin (bat), O'Leary, and Willetts.

If I recall correctly, in your timeline, this series was being designed right after the 1909 season ended. And,
everyone wanted a "piece" of Cobb; so, ATC gave the public what they wanted by providing him in as many
tobacco packs as were available to the public.

Anyhow, I'm sure some more backs will be confirmed for the 5 other super-prints, but none of these subjects
will approach having the numerous backs that the Red Cobb has.

Hi Ted,
I agree, I think we'll see a few more of the Superprints surface with different backs. But, knowing Cobb and his ego, he probably insisted his photo was printed more than anyone elses. Besides, they probably had to pay him more, so they might as well print more... Be well Brian

Ted, Brian:

Consider the following:

1. There are more T206 subjects depicting Chase (5) than Cobb (4).
2. There are more superprints of Chase (2) than Cobb (1).
3. ATC was located in New York--where of course Chase played.

My guess is that all six superprinted subjects enjoyed very similar print runs.

[And in my experience watching eBay, Chase (Dark Cap) is just about as ubiquitous as Cobb (Red)].

Scot

Edited to add: Also, Ted, you have (quite impressively) been able to acquire all superprints with Sovereign 460 EXCEPT Cobb (Red). I believe this would hint, at least, that Cobb (Red) was printed in no greater numbers than the other superprints.

I am not sure that the two cards of Chase, Chance, and in particular, Evers will be found with as many
backs as the Red Cobb.

And, I say this because Chase (portrait-blue) is my very 1st T206 (acquired 26 yrs ago) and my favorite.
I have most of the variety of backs Chase was printed with (including Broad Leaf) and I've not seen any
more than the currently confirmed 18 backs.

BRIAN W and SCOT R

Matty is my best guess, as the subject that will approach having as many backs as Cobb. He was more
popular in the New York scene than any other ballplayer. His won-lost (89-26) record for the T206 plan-
ning years (1908-10) was amazing. Actually, I'm surprised the T206 guys didn't print a 4th pose of him.

While I'll agree that the card of Chase (dark cap) is, as ubiquitous (neat adjective, Scot) as the red Cobb,
this Chase has a lot of catching up to do.

And Scot, you deserve the credit for my Sovereign 460 Matty and Chance, as you 1st found them for me.

Thanks,
TED Z

You guys motivated me to do some added research on the 6 super-prints. Here are the revised (upward) number
of diff. backs for each of these subjects......

Diff backs
________

26............Cobb (red)
20............Mathewson (dark cap)
20............Chance (portrait-yellow)
19............Chase (portrait-blue)
19............Chase (dark cap)
18............Evers (bat-yellow sky)

Regarding Matty....missing from his #s are, DRUM, LENOX, and Red HINDU. These three backs are found among
the other 5 super-prints; therefore, there is a high probability that Matty will be found with these. That would
raise his number of backs up to 23....very close to Cobb's 26.

Also, Broad Leaf 350 is a possibility....but, the only super-print I know of with the BL 350 back is Chase (blue).
And, this I can vouch for since I have it.

SCOT

Speaking about Cobb.....upon your suggestion, I added the American Beauty 460 back to Cobb's list. Now, I'd
like to ask you why....when none of the super-prints have been confirmed with this back ?

Ted,

I have no proof that any of the six superprints is extant with AB460. My argument for their existence is simply one of symmetry: These six are the only T206 subjects that can be found with BOTH Sovereign 350 and 460 and with BOTH Cycle 350 and 460--so why not with BOTH American Beauty 350 and 460? On the other hand, American Beauty, while difficult, is not exceedingly rare--so maybe we would have seen at least one of these six with AB 460 by now if they indeed existed.

Correct me if I am wrong on this.....American Beauty 350, Cycle 350 & 460, and Sovereign 350 & 460 are all Factory 25.
Am Bty 460 is Fac 42....and there in lies the difference.

Over the years I've tried to collect Am Bty backs as the Green colored backs have always appealed to me; and, I don't
recall seeing any of the six S-S with AB 460 backs.

Ted,

Interesting observation.

I draw an analogy based on series and you show it is imperfect based on factories.

Touche.

I will note, however, that all six superprints appear with Piedmont 460 Factory 42, Sweet Caporal 460 Factory 42 and Sweet Caporal 460 Factory 42 Overprint. So, if indeed the superprints are not possible with AB460, it is not because these subjects never appear with a 460/42 back.

Yes, Factory 42 shows up with the Piedmont and Sweet Cap brands; however, I think you'll agree that the AB 460
backs were printed at the very tail end of T206 production line. And, my main proof of this, is that the majority of
them exist with subjects in the 460-only series. And, very few belong to the subjects in the 350/460 series.

The more I think about this possible "no-print" AB 460 scenario with the SIX S-S subjects, I see it as related the S-S cards
existing with the AB 350-frame backs. There exists a mutally exclusive scenario between these two AB backs; therefore, we
cannot expect to find the S-S with AB 460 backs.

Ted,

Perhaps.

My thinking has always been that the six superprints were originally conceived as 350-only subjects (hence like 350-only subjects they appear with the AB350 WITH frame back), but due to their popularity these six were extended into the 460 series. When they decided on the extension, ATC didn't bother to reprint these six with the AB350 NO frame back that first appeared with the 350/460 regular print subjects. However, this still doesn't explain adequately in my mind why these six were not printed with the AB460 back--which appears on 350/460 RP subjects as well as 460-only subjects.

I'm still trying to come up with a logical explanation to support my feeling that we are not going to find AB 460 backs
on these 6 cards.

Your point that ATC originally intended these to be just part of the 350-only series (given the AB 350-frame backs)
sounds very plausible. Perhaps when they designed the subsequent series they needed 6 cards to fill out the printing
sheet, they reached back and chose these 6 subjects (just as you said....due to their popularity).
Speaking about popularity, why not include a Tinker card in this group of super-prints, instead of two Chase cards ?

This is exactly what happened in the 1936 Diamond Star set (with the 12 repeated players in the Hi# series). And, in
the 1949 Bowman set, where 12 cards (from an early series) were reprinted to fill out the last sheet in the Hi# series.

Let's assume that I am right about the six superprints being originally intended as 350-only subjects. Tinker does NOT appear in the 350-only series, thus ATC could not have chosen him as a superprint! Instead, two cards of the locally popular Prince Hal were selected for this honor.

Combining the data of your spread sheet, Bill's SS, various Internet sources and including the AB 460 cards
I have, yielded approx. 50 of the possible 110 subjects with AB 460 backs.

Therefore, I am going to start an American Beauty 460 thread and see what shows up ?

You said......
"Let's assume that I am right about the six superprints being originally intended as 350-only subjects.
Tinker does NOT appear in the 350-only series....."

There is a Tinker (bat off shoulder) in the 350/460 series; and, could've been selected to round out the
popular Tinker-Evers-Chance trio. But, since he was not, I think this adds more credence to your theory
regarding the 6 super-prints having been originally intended ONLY for the 350 series.

Default Red Cobb - 26 diff backs....your favorite T206 Cobb is ?

Posted By: Scot Reader

Hi Ted,

Tinker (Bat Off) is a 350/460 regular print. Thus, he is theoretically possible with the American Beauty NO FRAME back but not the American Beauty WITH FRAME back and could NOT have been selected as a superprint. The superprints were selected from among the 350-only series subjects, not from among the 350/460 regular print subjects. Or so the theory goes.

I just singled out this particular Tinker card as an example of....if ATC's choice for the six S-S was indeed
a "popularity" decision, then they might have selected him (instead of Chase-dark cap).

But, the fact that they did not....I am saying further reinforces your "350-only" theory in selecting the six.

Does this mean that the Cobb is less likely to increase in value compared to other HOF cards in the set? Seems like it's much more plentiful than any other card, but it's still Cobb. I didn't buy mine for investment, but this thread has sparked my curiosity.

DUSTAN

The demand for Ty Cobb cards has always been very high. Therefore, the T206 Red Cobb's value, despite
its easy availability, will keep going up. The Green Cobb, however, is a better T206 with respect to value
appreciation.
There are only 8 confirmed backs of this Cobb....and, the fact that it was issued in the very 1st series of
T206's....makes it a much tougher Cobb to find.

Ted, I sincerely hope you will publish or upload a monograph on all of your T206 research once it is "complete" (as if!). I find all of this fascinating as you drill down into the different brand/player/back possibilities.

Bat Off Cobb is probably my favorite T206, the color is unbeatable!

And if you decide to write the Ted206 monograph, I think a website would work well if you have the software and skill set.

My pick is the Green Cobb.
A fav, second only to the angelic Johnson portrait in the 206 heaven.

A monograph by TRex is a great idea!! I'd buy it immediately!

best,
barry

I agree with you....the Green one is my favorite....from an aesthetic standpoint, it appeals
to me the most. And, since it was always more of a challenge to find this Cobb.

Also, the fact that it was the very 1st of the four Cobb's to be issued.
