Meet the Mets, greet the Mets
Come on down and meet the Mets
Bring the kiddies, bring the wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life
Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball
Knockin' those homeruns over the wall
East side west side all around the town
Because da da da da da
Something something New York town.

We're going to win, Twins,
We're going to score.
We're going to win Twins,
Watch that baseball soar.
Crack out a home run,
Shout a hip-hoo-ray!
Cheer for the Minnesota Twins,
Today!

Hey don't kill the messenger, I didn't write it!

Elton John sings "where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?" I can't remember the song title or the rest of the lyrics (not a big fan of Elton John).

Jeff- that's Simon and Garfunkel, from "Mrs. Robinson" on the "Bookends" album. What Englishman would care about the Yankee Clipper? Don't they play cricket and other weird games?

We have long collected player endorsed and team endorsed rare baseball sheet music

Our five favorite songs (we have the sheet music for each) are

1. Come Out Where The Buffalo Feds Play

2. Oh You, Babe Ruth

3. They All Knew Cobb

4. Say Hey, Willie Mays

5. I Can't Get To First Base Without You (Mrs. Gehrig dedicated to husband Lou

They each make for perfect music for our Valentine's Day celebration.

How about this one (cribbed from baseball-fever.co):

"The Brooklyn Dodger Jump"

VERSE
Brooklyn, Brooklyn Hear us while we say
Brooklyn, Brooklyn, just for you we play.
You're the very greatest borough in the U.S.A.
Brooklyn, Brooklyn, you ain't got no squares.
Brooklyn, Brooklyn, you got no long hairs.
'Cause that Barberman , he tells you 'bout those Brooklyn play'rs.

PATTER
He tells you of Hermanski, Furillo and the Duke
Of Shotten, Blades and Pitler, not to mention good ol' Suke;
Of Robinson and Hodges and Captain Pee Wee Reese,
Of Cox and Campanella, how their efforts never cease.
Oh! Barber, Barber, don't you ever stop
You're the very greatest tonic in our barber shop.

CHORUS
Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Brooklyn, U.S.A.
Oh! Dodgers, Oh! Dodgers, Oh! Dodgers , how you play.
Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Dodgers, you both are here to stay.

PATTER
That Barberman he tells you of Barney, Branca, Roe
Of Banta, Minner, Martin and of good ol' Hatten, Joe
Palica, Newcombe, Edwards, McCormick, Whitman, Brown
And Miksis, Rackley, Jorgy, how the whole gang goes to town!
Oh! Barber, Barber, you're a good ol' soul.
You're the very highest fellow on our barber pole.

CHORUS
Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Brooklyn, U.S.A.
Oh! Dodgers, Oh! Dodgers, Oh! Dodgers , how you play.
Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Dodgers, we sing your song today.

VERSE
We sing the praises of the stars you knew
Like Vance and Grimes and Uncle Robbie, too
And of all the many others to whom much credit's due.
We sing about one Dodger, who, 'tis said,
When catching flies would really use his head.
It's too bad they couldn't teach him to use his glove instead.

PATTER
But don't you start afrettin' there's no cause for alarm
The Dodgers now are learnin' how to keep away from harm.
They're gettin' really healthy in mind as well as arm
'Cause all of them are bloomiin' down on Mister Rickey's farm.
Oh! Rickey, Rickey he's on top you see
He's the very highest Branch on our family tree.

CHORUS
Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Brooklyn, U.S.A.
Oh! Dodgers, Oh! Dodgers, Oh! Dodgers , how you play.
Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Dodgers, hoo-ray, hoo-ray, hoo-ray!

PATTER
Our tree holds lots of Dodgers, some old and some are new
And some are srtictly Minor, but then lots are Major, too.
Though there may be some lemons, the most of them are plums
But no matter how you slice 'em, they are all still Brooklyn Chums!
Oh! Dodgers, Oh! Dodgers, hear us while we say
You will always be our champions of the U.S.A.

CHORUS
Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Brooklyn, U.S.A.
Oh! Dodgers, Oh! Dodgers, Oh! Dodgers , how you play.
Oh! Brooklyn, Oh! Dodgers, hoo-ray, hoo-ray, hoo-ray!

. . . the coquettish maiden with the sparkling eye and light-hearted laugh who sparked Boston to six pennants and five world championships in 14 glorious years 1903-1915.

Tessie is a maiden with a sparkling eye
Tessie is a maiden with a laugh
Tessie doesn't know the meaning of a sigh
Tessie's lots of fun and full of chaff
But sometimes we have a little quarrel we two
Tessie always turns her head away
Then it's up to me to do as all boys do
So I take her hand to mine and say

Tessie you make me feel so sadly
Why don't you turn around
Tessie you know love you madly
Babe my heart weighs a pound
Don't blame me if I ever doubt you
Tessie you are the only only only

Well, I spent some time in the Mudville Nine, watchin' it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when the Mighty Casey struck out.
So Say Hey Willie, tell Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio;
Don't say "it ain't so", you know the time is now.

I have two more sheets of lyrics to this BB song.....does anyone really want to see them ?

Otherwise, I wont bother.....but, I will tell you an interesting story about this sheet music, anyways.

Twelve years ago a fellow named John approached my booth at the Philly Show with these sheets.
And, was quietly going thru numerous cards on my table. So, I offered to help him and he asked me
if I had any of the BB players on his sheet music. I immediately recognized the song and began to
sing it. It was always a very catchy tune that would haunt you for the rest of the day.

Anyhow, John's only BB card collecting was to acquire any available card of all the ballplayers in this
song which would always end in the musical refrain....."Van Lingle Mungo".

It was quite a challenge as it took several years but we came within, I think 2 cards, of finding all the
players. The real toughies were the players, whose short careers were during the WWII era, when no
BB cards were issued.
Guys like Augie Bergamo, Johnny Gee, Danny Gardella, Bobby Estalella, etc.

Talk about a "TYPE" set.....it doesn't get too much more out of the mainstream than this one.

I have sheet music of:

"Babe Ruth, Babe Ruth, we know what he can do". (I also have the rare pin that came with the sheet music.)

And

"Remember me to my old gal" Successfully introduced by three great ball players, Chief Bender, Coombs, and Morgan. The heros of the World's series. Printed in 1911.

On the back of this sheet music there is a song called "There's a mother old and gray who needs me now" And it goes as follows:

There's a mother old and gray who needs me now. Time has brought deep furrows to her once fair brow.
Though so fond of you I've grown, yet I can't leave her alone.

Hmmm...probably would be a rap song now days.

Van Lingle Mungo is my personal favorite. I used to live near Dave Frishberg and heard him perform once in a while but he's been living in Oregon, I think, for quite a while. Another fav of mine is Dave's "My Attorney, Bernie."

I also knew the son of the woman who co-wrote "Meet the Mets." He had one of the all time great card collections.

I think "Meet the Mets" has been around since 1962. I wish I could remember those last two lines.

My favorite, too....I thought it would be sort of "hokey" to post this Thread; but, I
am very pleasantly surprised at the response.

Do you have any insight as to what inspired Dave Frishberg to compose this song ?

One of the reason's it's my favorite BB song....is that when I was about 9 years old,
a neighborhood friend, who was an avid Dodger fan, mentioned the name....Van Lingle
Mungo.
I replied to him....that's not a real name....it's sounds like a musical name ?

Little did I know, at age 9, how clairvoyant I was..ha !

Thanks for your response.
