Default Help with vintage baseball jersey?

At the flea market today, I found this really old(?) MAINE baseball jersey. I couldn't resist, so I picked it up.

I have never bought any old jerseys before, so I don't know anything at all about them.

Is it rare? What time period is it from?
I think it is made of wool or something like that. I presume it is real, based on the wear (I think there are a few moth holes at the bottom), but I really don't know.

I found a photo of the UMaine 1938 team, and they look like they are wearing a similar jersey, so I think maybe it is from around then?

Any help with time period, etc. would be great. Also, I placed it in a jersey frame on the wall; is there any special care for old jerseys?

Thanks,
Sean

Nice looking jersey Sean. Please tell me you didn't remove the Godzilla jersey to display it.

Sean, could be from U. Of Maine, as this jersey dates the the 30s. Typical jerseys like this, from that period, are not rare, and would be about $75 - but the value in this would be in the Maine connection. For an alum or someone from Maine there could be great interest as I am sure not many U Maine jerseys from then survived. I see you are from Maine, so great pick up - you should be excited.

No real special care should be taken - if you have it framed just keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading. You can also hand wash it if needed without any concern. Let air dry. Try doing more research to pinpoint the Maine team, and even the player. Yearbooks are great for this.

Thanks guys!

Uhhhh...Godzilla is temporarily living in the baseball closet...that jersey is a store bought one, I think, so I feel like the Maine jersey deserves a nice spot.

Great idea on the yearbooks. I will try and figure out who the player was.

Sean, there used to be a store in Cooperstown that for years displayed this 1915-20s Maine jersey in their window display. I also recall going to bar in Kennebunkport many years ago and seeing a similar 1915 jersey displayed on the wall.

Oh, that is way cool.

You are correct, the Maine connection is important to me. I went to UMaine, and until last year, had season hockey tickets.

I also have an old photo of the UMaine hockey team, and the football team from the 20's; and I helped my buddy Steve acquire Carl Willey's World Series bat.

Since I love baseball, finding a old Maine baseball jersey is awesome!

Maybe I will start a Maine sports collection...

I agree U of Maine. I have Minnesota jerseys from that era and earlier and that is just like them. I think it is worth considerably more than a regular $75 jersey with that connection, but probably worth more to you with your connection. Finally, I'm sorry that you had to watch so much Maine hockey. Go Gophers!

Lol. I watched them win the NCAA when I was 20. But last year, I actually gave up and buying the season tickets, because they sucked.
But next year, if they play the Gophers, I will buy tickets just to watch them kick the Gopher's a$$!!!!!!! I will take some photos for you!!!!! Lol.

Thanks for the information though!!!!!!

Sean
