If you don't mind Leon I'll kick off the 2nd half of November "Recent Pick Up" thread...

The Meusel came from Rhys. The Willetts gets me one step closer to completion of the set. Seven more to go.

Personally the Meusel is the 2nd best horizontal card I've seen. The pose is very unique to pre-war cards. It is only 2nd to the Zeenut Halla.

The Zeenut Halla
King Of All Horizontals
Please Help Me Find One!

Haiku ode to Halla....dang am I tired.

Missing a corner, but for under $60 the rest of the card is beautiful!

Thanks for the kudos on the Goudeys. I'm so blown away by this set that I'm strongly considering trying to put it together card by card. These are the first two I've ever bought ....and I think they are just spectacular.

Great auction, btw. Auction ended early Saturday morning, had the cards in hand Monday afternoon. The manager of the greatest Cuban team of all and an early player with the Cuban Stars in the States. Pretty cool, I think.

Scott and Zach, as with T206 text variations, if there are two it must be a legimate variation

HUGE late '40s card of Kawakami (great slugger before OH)

1929 card from Meiji University--no pro leagues yet there.

Mask of first japanese pro 300 game winner, Bessho.

HALF-mask of same guy--much rarer (these masks are to be worn by a child--the eyes on the half mask are punched out, but mask appears not to hasve been worn.

Ghostly card of Starffin--my favorite Japanese (O.K. Russian!) pitcher of the '30s and '40s.

Starffin with his teammates before the All-Japan game against the SF Seals.

And congratulations to Ryan Christoff for his pick up of a signed, game-used Isao Harimoto bat (only Japanese 500 Hr--3000 hit guy) Japanese game used bats are like non existant (except for Ichiro's, and other Japanese playing here--and even they're rare!)

Yours may be a bit nicer.

On second thought, I think mine is. I was thinking of the flaw in the green on mine, but I think the face coloring and the borders are better on mine.

Yes, I like your corners much better. My green is more consistant throughout. It looks like there is some worn areas in your green background. How's the back? I don't know yet for mine because this came from Barry's auction.

Jimi- There are some stains in the back, as stated in the catalog. But the front is very nice for a PSA-2

REA, like almost everything else. Wonder if it re-graded a 2 (or a--20? I get confused). I occasionally bought cards in holders, but always took them out. Most of them have re-graded exactly what they were before--those that I bought graded...with some notable acceptions.

1948 Baseball Back Menko set.

I knew who the players were at one point and even printed out a list of their names along with their pictures. I will see if I can dig it up for you. I hope you enjoy them!

edited to add: In Engel's 4th edition, Tetsuharu Kawakami is included in the set. He is a member of both the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame and the Meikyuakai!

He's in the set, but no card in the set has that number on the back (at least till now)--about 2000 higher than any other number. I e-mailed Gary, and he said it was 'strange." Didn't offfer to buy, or throw a price at me, so I guess it's just a weird sort of a double. I'll e-mail him again, when this busy day is over.
