Seen others like it... although I don't know what they are called, I'm pretty sure it's a notebook cover or the cover of a paper tablet. I'm sure others will have more accurate responses. I agree that they are very attractive looking pieces!

MastroNet auctioned an uncut sheet of them, I think referring to them as notebook covers proofs(their description will be found in the old aucton catalog). The sheet was soonafter cut down into singles for resale.

I beleive all the known singles came from the one sheet, so there are only a few of each player. I think Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb and Walter Johson are included.

I used to own that exact Criger "1908 notebook cover", and also the Waddell below. I picked them both up on eBay a few years back right after they were cut.

David is right, they were originally seen in a big sheet, including Cobb, Mathewson, and a few other players. I believe there is only a couple of each player known. I havent seen them on eBay for a while. When they first hit the market you used to see them more often for sale.

What's interesting about the covers is that some of the equipment shown is old time even for the time. King Kelly would have considered those shoes out of fashion.
