Randy Johnson yesterday tied HOFers Bob Feller and Eppa Rixey for career wins with 266. Who's got some Eppa Rixey cards to show off?

What must it be like going thru life with a name of Eppa Jepha?

Gilbert

Well, he didn't have to go through his whole life with that name. Apparently it was bestowed upon him when he made it to the majors.

According to Baseball Library: "Eppa also acquired a middle name: Jephtha. It was invented by a sportswriter inspired by the resonance it had when spoken between "Eppa" and "Rixey." In time, the pitcher accepted it as his own." The SABR account differs a bit. Speaking about his trade to Cincinnati: "Everything - except the nickname "Jeptha" that sportswriter William Phelan hung on him, which he tolerated but didn't like - was falling into place for Rixey."

Interestingly, that makes Scot's card an error card (the SABR site has it spelled correctly). Anyone know whether there are cards from that same issue with his "middle" name spelled correctly?

Well, going thru your adult life with somebody trying to hang a silly moniker on you is way different than being taunted by kids - while you wonder "What could Mommy have been thinking"?
