I change directions with cards as much as my wife changes shampoo. For the time being though...I'm wanting a single example of each of the e cards...e90 up through e107. anyone want to venture a guess how hard it may be to obtain? keep in mind....LOW grade will be the key...1's...10's...maybe 20's or 2-30's...

anybody else have such a ridiciliously dumb goal?

Complete every Cubs team set from each pre-war tobacco issue.

With the cost of the T3, T204, and T222, there's no way I will do this, but I am farther than I would have guessed after only a year!

From Pete Calderon's Website. Ranked by difficulty.

E90.1 The most commonly found.
E95 Commonly found.
E92 Dockman Commonly found.
E91 Commonly found.
E96 Harder to find, not difficult.
E93 Harder to find, not difficult.
E101 A little harder to find, but not difficult.
E98 A little harder to find, borderline difficult.
E92 Croft's & Allen Difficult.
E106 Difficult.
E94 Very difficult.
E102 Very difficult.
E92 Croft's Cocoa Very difficult - almost as hard as Nadjas.
E92 Nadja Very difficult.
E103 Very difficult.
E97 Extremely difficult.
E90.2 Extremely difficult.
E90.3 Extremely difficult.
E99 & E100 Extremely difficult.
E105 Extremely difficult.
E104 Extremely difficult.
E107 Near Impossible - see one - BUY IT.
E97 Black & White Near Impossible - you don't buy it, I will.
E94 Overprints Near Impossible - you don't buy it, I will

If in fact you are going after one each of the above I think you should budget at least $15,000. Anyone lese have any thoughts for a budget?

Dave,

Cool goal. I'm a little surprised to see that I have 12 of the 24 listed. Which do you need and which do you already have - besides the one you just got?

My goal is a card of a Detroit player (Tigers or predecessors from 19th Century) from every set pre-1915. For sets with no Detroiters - like minor leagues, team-only, etc - I try for any player that played for any amount of time in Detroit - even for just one inning.

I'll never get there - too many expensive obscure sets from both 19C and 20C. But I've been happily splashing around in the mainstream sets for the last 6 or 7 years. I've filled a lot of those, so I shop for the female player images to fill the gaps.

I sometimes get more than one Detroiter in a given set - mostly just to kill time and if I like the set.

So which do you still need?

J

Ouch...15k? whew...I'm going on the basis to start with of a "basic" set...meaning I don't think I'll worry about an E94 overprint back or an E97 black and white for the time being....

Thanks to Joann tonight on ebay I'm now at 1 E93, 1 E94, 1 E95, 2 E97's, 2 E101's, and a E106...one of the E97's I can use eventually as trade bait, same as the E101...wishing now I would have kept my E107 I had

But again..I flip flop so much....just this morning I was trying to talk myself into going into the E97 set with beaters..but I figured an example of each E card in the long run would be a whole lot cheaper.

Hi Dave,
Nothing ridiculous about this quest-- it's a great concept. I've been doing it for three years or so, and now have all except the E104-3 Nadja. I estimate you could do it for $5-10K if you weren't too picky about condition. E90-1, E91, 92, 93, 95, 96, 101 can be gotten for less than $100 apiece, which is a good start. The E107, E99, E100, E104s will all cost closer to $1000 than $100. Others in between--

Good luck!

Tim

Dan:

That is a beauty but would eat up at least 25% of my budget.

Tim:

I think you're a tad high on the e99's and e100's. Right on with e104. A tad low on e107 unless you're willing to accept a real beater. All in all I still think we're over $10K.

From these numbers it looks like $3K per year over about a four year period may get you an e-card type set.

That sure doesn't sound like a "ridiculously dumb goal" to me.

As far as E107's...I've seen examples lately in the $500 range..heck I just sold one a few weeks ago for $425 or something like that. I am thinking the others that will be up in price would be the E103's and the E104's...but will settle for complete beaters in both of those as well.

anybody think there is a e set that would be cheaper to acquire in low grade than going about this e90-107 series of cards?

would e95 or e96 be cheaper if you really scoured sales? or maybe e101?

I have the ultimate in silly goals, one card of each major leaguer from 1908-45. I was doing a type card collection along with it, but have decided that I need to move the expensive type cards like my e104-3s and Ju Ju Drum, etc in order to get closer to my goal.

Well yes, that would be impossible for me...even if you took in each players card at the cheapest would be crazy money wise.

This route for me looks like 18 cards if my math is right at midnight. 5 down, three more to trade, and a cobb e95 in the whole for when i really need the money

Great goal. Most won't be too tough to find if you are not too worried about condition. Tough ones include E99, E100, and E107. Even these pop up on occassion. TBob sold an E100 last night on the BST.
