Default What is your collecting focus today?

Posted By: Seth B.

I've been living in Italy and will continue to be there until next May, so I've been trying to stop thinking about cards, but I just can't help it!

When I return to the good ole US of A, I am 3 measly cards away from a T209-1 set, and I'll also be collecting the T209-2. Right now, the fact that I'm only looking means that I can deal with the tanking dollar.

Holy Moses! Some awful nice cards on this thread. And Dan P., terrific on-line collection; your basement is Cardboard Heaven!

From my photo site, and I quote: "My focus now, although broad and eclectic, is to seek cards I like with an emphasis on cabinet cards and type-card collecting, and a tendency toward certain players such as Christy Mathewson, John McGraw, Home Run Baker and Joe Wood."

Joe D. - recognize the photographer on the Matty cabinet?

David, along with the W600 and your 1914 CJ you have about as incredible a Mathewson collection as one could ever dream of.

I started out with an assembly similar to that of Dan P, without the rookie focus; and it degraded to a collection commemorating my perception of the annual highlights of the sport, 1876-2000.

does your collection now include items other than cards, then?
How do you choose to commemorate and what kind of events?

t213-3 is my primary focus, I need about 10 more for the set, which is turning into a life-long pursuit
t206, still working on the monster, aiming for SGC 50/60 cards these days, about 80% complete
1954 topps, working on a high grade 7 and up set
1956 topps, set complete, but will upgrade along the way (currently around vg-ex/ex)
1958 topps, vg-ish set which is about 80% complete

rgutheil@gmail.com

shoot me an e-mail if you have anything you think I may need. All my sets are listed on the SGC website and either have Rob in the title or Rob Gutheil.

good luck all,

rob

David,

The Matty photo was the single item I liked in the auction.
I had my own internal battle but in the end, I was not a bidder due to other distractions.

I love that photo and the Falk stamp on the cabinet takes it off the charts.

I wondered where it went....
I am happy to see it is in your collection!
Although, as has been the case many many times - - I am green with envy....
It is awesome that such an incredible Matty is in your hands.

BTW... my one regret at the national is not having the chance to sit and talk with you. I am sure we were in the same room at times.... but somehow we didn't bump into each other. Hopefully we get together at a future national.

Joe

Like Jason above, Pre War Red Sox. All Red Sox all of the time.

I do love some of the Pre War sets and someday I may tackle a few but for now, you could say I am focused.

David, it was my pleasure meeting you in Chicago at the Net54 dinner, and I'm really looking forward to adding that Matty cab to my collection when you send it to me.

I'm focused right now on my '38 Goudey and Henry Johnson Confectioners sets, as well as prewar HOFers.

I should focus more on particular sets but ....I try to pick up cards that I can afford.

My main interests:

T212 - Obaks
T206 - with a new interest in obtaining Southern Leaguers.
T207

Mike G -

I think it is great that you put college as your number 1 priority.

Might I suggest though.... that you change the 3.5 years to 7 years.
College is the best time of your life - spend as much time there as possible.

My collecting focus is primarily anything Nashville Baseball, secondarily anything Tennessee Baseball... Ball Cards, Post Cards, Pictures, Autographed Bats, Balls, Jerseys, etc. I have been collecting Nashville stuff for about 5 years now. (Life long resident of this wonderful Southern City !)

I am still looking for a 19th Century Nashville example... (A Quest for me)

My focus to expand my Deaf Sports Collection to everything. I was able to get 75 percents of Deaf players cards such as Dummy Hoy, Taylor, Curtis Pride, Kenny Walker. Lately i been trying to get game tickets from games that deaf players played.

I hope to find 5 more backs of T206 Dummy Taylor, Buffalo-

...it's been Washington baseball. Lucky for me they were so bad for so long--not very many HOFers. Imagine how awful it would be to be a Yankees fan, for example.

Not sure exactly what I am doing is right now. I am simultaneously chasing E-cards of specific Highlanders players, and am trying to assemble a T209-1 set, which currently stands at 0 cards. I have been stalking certain collectors I know are in possession of said cards, though, so hopefully my amateur sleuthing will yield favorable results.

The antithesis of this topic, what am I NOT focusing on, is another matter. I am focusing on NOT buying T206s. They're so readily available and when I can't find something I "need," I find myself buying bits and pieces of The Monster, which I subsequently try to unload on the BST in large lots at a loss so as to finance the aforementioned cards, which are never available anyway.

In an attempt to compromise with myself, I have a clause which allows me to buy any Gordon Hickman T206 card I see, which isn't often, as I think I have managed to corner much of the market in the past few years.

In summary, my focus is on: (A) preventing T206s from finding their way into my collection, and (B) stalking people who I think might be in possession of tough cards I need for survival. Oh yeah. And the Gordon Hickman thing. And a G.I. Joe with the Kung Fu grip...
