Default Any other minor league/PCL/obscure set collectors out there?

Posted By: Brian McQueen

I recently began collecting a few minor league/PCL sets (ie...t210, d311, etc..). I also collect some of the tougher Major League sets such as e103 and e90-3. Just wondering in general if there were too many other collectors on our forum attempting to complete some of the more obscure major league or minor league sets and if so, what you all collected.

Regards,

Brian

I got into collecting the minor league stuff because I was looking for cards of guys who played in the Negro Leagues. Also, my grandmother was a big Oakland Oaks fan. Right now, I'm really only collecting stuff from the 50's--I ahve a couple Hage's Dairy, a few Globe Printings, a few Parkhurst, about halfway through the Laval Dairy set, a few Mother's, a bunch of Remar Oaks cards, etc. One day, I'd really love to start up with the Obaks and Zeenut cards as I think they're just great sets. My dream PCL card would be a Jimmy Claxton Zeenut. That card's got everything for me--he played for the Oaks, he played in the Negro Leagues, it's a PCL issue and it's vintage. Perfect!

I have a 30-year obsession with the ugly little things, but haven't had the scratch to amass a really nice group until the last 5 or so years. I still have a bunch of HOFers and popular players I want and I am certain that absent a really lucky stroke I will never own the Thorpe, the Claxton or the Black Sox players, but I am still trying. Vince DeMaggio [sic] just joined the flock. Look for a whimsical article I wrote on a Zeenut in an upcoming Old Cardboard.

I am semi intersted in starting a c46 set but would like to read up on the issue first. I am not sure if it is an obscure minor league issue though.

1955 Old Homestead Des Moines Bruins (class A team)
1949 Sunbeam/Puretta Sacramento Salons (PCL)

It is a problem, but I love the rare (and usually ugly) obscure sets.

I haven't seen Richard Lloyd on this board in a while, but his collection is chock full of obscure.

I also collect 1909 Obak horizontals (PCL), but they are beautiful.

I've been collecting T210-2s for a little bit and have had some great help from board members with some cheap lowgrade ones. I have also started the T209-2 Greenville team because I know right now I can not do the whole set so why not just concentrate on one area, complete that, and then move onto another team. As far as obscure cards I don't really activly collect Voskamp's but I do have 30 percent of the set and have plans to pursue it once I have enough income to back up $500+ card purchases.

As a Detroit collector for 30 years, about 6 months ago I started having an interest in players in the minor leagues who played for Detroit at one time. Have some Zeenuts, Obaks and C46 issues..

T-210 Series 6 --I am finishing up the last 2 Frankfort players I need then I will start on another team --I am interested in the history of the Blue Grass League ( 1908-1912) and these cards are a fascinating way to tie the research to actual pictures of the players.

I've been working on a T210-1 Columbus team set for a while, but am stuck on a couple to finish it off. I thought i had the thing finished when i found someone with some T210's, but when i got my package from them I also got a note saying they were mistaken on the cards they thought they had and only had a couple of Series 8 Chattanooga guys, which they sent along. Not sure how they could be mistaken, but i didn't turn down the series 8's either.

I had picked up some 1909 Columbus thick stock photo's at an Antique store; they'd been cut out of a large team display. I thought i'd try to find cards of each of the players to match their photo's, hence the focus of Columbus T210's.

As a longtime resident of California, I've always been fascinated by Pacific Coast League cards. The Obaks, as well as the 1948 Signal Oil cards and the 1952-53 Mothers Cookies are among my favorite sets. The '48 Signal Oil cards, which only feature Oakland Oaks, may be the first baseball card set ever to use actual color photos. Even if they're not the first (does anybody out there know of an earlier set?), the images are among the finest on any cards ...

1928 F52 Fro Joy - missing one card
1949 Sunbeam/Pureta Sacramento Salons (PCL) - need one card
1922 T231 Fans Cigarettes - need two cards

I collect ANYTHING related to Minor League baseball teams in Lincoln, Nebraska...I have a pretty good collection of Lincoln Athletics and Chiefs going, but this stuff is very hard to obtain.

I'm embarking on a T209 Type I collection. Mostly with the help of our moderator, I'm a quarter way there so far. I grew up in North Carolina (not so long ago), and I love the local flavor and great pictures of the cards. (Plus, when else can you get a picture of someone named "Fullenwider?" I think I'd like to embark on the T209 IIs at some point as well, I just picked up my first one. That set is daunting in its combination of size and rarity, but collecting by team is a great idea, does anyone know a checklist by team availabe for that set?
I also collect T212 (any series) of "Bernard" when I get a chance to buy one. No relation, but it's kinda cool having an old baseball card with your last name on it (be even cooler if my last name were Lajoie, I suppose).

In 1984 I completed the really tough 1949 Bowman PCL set. And, in
reading the backs of these cards I realized that most of the 36 guys
in this set were career PCL players. Indeed, back then the Pacific Coast
League could be considered as a 3rd "major league". The player salaries
were not too far different than many Major Leaguers' salaries, then.

Here is "Sheriff" Gassaway (1949 Bowman & Signal Oil)

Also, I collect all Cooney cards (my wife's maiden name)

And, a Red Sun (or two....this one is Greminger)

Finally, still struggling to acquire all the C46 cards

I'm working on 1952 Mother's Cookies, T210-2s and a number of Zeenuts sets as well as Los Angeles and Venice Zeenuts! I'd love to do E100, but only have 1. I'm also doing 1949 Bowman PCL -- anyone else working on that?

Andy

I have a complete set, that I am constantly upgrading.
So, I always have a few extras. If you email me a list of the
cards you need, I will see if I can help you with your set.
