Default Spalding Cyclometer

I believe we have a few collectors on the board with interest in early Spalding or Bicycles (Steve B.) or both....I thought this late 1890s cyclometer was very cool. I didn't bid, but was following the auction.

Here is an 1896 Adv.

That's really cool. I love old gadgets like that. It didn't go for a buck and a half this time...

Default Very Cool

I don't know anything about it but sure cool looking...the Spalding name is in killer calligraphy...23 bids so it was probably a good example...I like cycling stuff...matter fact I just received last week an unusual 1890's bicycle insurance sign I just couldn't pass up for $50.00...in period frame with wavy glass...From the wording "Every wheel we sell"...I guess it hung in a bike shop...but based on the 11" height it could have been a trolley car sign.

That's in really nice condition for one that was used.

The 1890's stuff always does well if it's presentable, the bike guys have discovered originality as opposed to restored.

And since nice bikes are harder to come by all the time there's more interest in original accessories.

Sadly that means the days of picking up really cool stuff for very little are mostly gone. But it also means that the REALLY cool stuff is now expensive enough for the people who have it to get it out and sell it.

The team only aerodynamic stuff I go after has basically become unavailable. Too rare, too beat for the racers who had some to keep, and recently way too expensive for me.
