Default LAST DAY FOR BIDDING 2-2-13: Love of the Game Auctions

Hi, everyone, and Happy New Year!

I'd like to invite everyone to visit Love of the Game Auctions and check out our Winter, 2013 sale, which has been open for about half an hour now.

We have a large selection of prewar baseball cards and memorabilia this time around, including the entire Rudy Strejc Collection of tobacco cards (including some great E98s and PCL cards), the beginnings of a large collection of T3 Turkey Reds, an E90-1 Joe Jackson, and an 1889 Hartley Studio cabinet of new Hall of Famer Hank O'Day.

We've also got a gorgeous original painting of Nap Lajoie by noted artist Arthur K. Miller, a Sporting Life trade card from the 1886 Akron Acorns (one of the teams at the center of the baseball segregation debate), and a gorgeous 1907 Eastern League composite photo.

Please visit our website and check out the auction - it closes on February 2!

Thanks, and good luck!
-Al

WOW, the consignor for the '05 Frank Baker postcard just bought it on e-bay a few weeks ago for $265. Already over $1K now (with BP), totally rediculous......

Phil,
Yes that was a good buy and quick profit.
Not sure what is ridiculous about it.

Yeah, I think it is around a $500 piece, it went so low on e-bay because the seller listed it in the postcards - people section instead of sports. I think it is way too high this time around though.........

I was the high bidder on it until tonight. I log on and I am outbid by 500.

At least two people think it worth at least that much or close.

My guess is that it will end at the current price. I am currently the underbidder and don't think it is worth near that much but just really wanted the card and went well above my pre-determined maximum to try and get it but I'm done.

LOL, okay there is at least one person who thinks it worth that much and one more who is willing to pay considerably more than he thinks it's worth. I am with you, I'd love to have it but I like my ballplayers in uniform.

As a consignor I'm very disappointed in the results. Dealers are getting some cheap inventory. Al is a great guy, but I'm very unhappy with prices. Would have done better on Ebay or selling to dealers.

Some of my consignments are below what I paid, which is of course disappointing [but not unexpected, given my quixotic purchasing patterns]; however, others are selling for far more than I expected.

There is also a considerable savings in time to me in having Al auction items, rather than listing them myself on ebay.

I think my consignments for both this auction and last auction are doing much better than ebay and without the fuss. Lots of late action on this auction. Sorry your items aren't doing well - must be a hit/miss thing, because a lot of what I'm watching is really strong.

Happy with my consignments, about 20-30% more than I could've gotten on ebay.
Not happy with a few things I wanted that are going much higher than I'd planned.

I was a bidder (not a consignor), but this is what I've been seeing too. I have given up bidding on my lots, but they keep going up. Everything I was following is way over recent VCP at this point...

Cheers,
Blair

I was an underbidder on the Matty E98. Considering the population of that card hasn't been blown apart by the Black Swamp Find, I didn't really think my bid was going to hold up. Matty has always been one of my collecting interests, because I live two hours from his hometown. I hope I don't regret bowing out of the bidding, though, considering blue background E98s were also completely unaffected by the Black Swamp find.

Just like I figured, no one else bid on the Baker postcard after I stopped, probably would have sold for $500 minus one bidder (either the winner or myself).

On the consignment side, my one item did not receive a single bid and went unsold. Really not a good night for me other than getting to bed before midnight.

Sorry for your loss. I predicted the Baker card would go for over $1k with all the recent "outings" on BST. Rest assured, it isn't in my collection either. Probably landed in either Scott Mt. Joy's or Jeff in Toronto's collection, if I were a betting man.

I was interested in the Baker to a point, but not at $1000.00+. If I remember correctly, one sold for around $400.00 on ebay not too long ago, I guess I should have gone after that one. Congrats to the winner though! Postcards are on FIRE lately, they don't fall under the radar anymore!

If anyone is using Ebay as a guage when determining market value on postcards your selling yourself short. To many times they are listed in the wrong category which keeps them hidden from so many collectors who otherwise would be active bidders. Couple that with the many who do not even use Ebay as a venue anymore because of their ever ending unfriendly changes we all seem to complain about here endlessly. Many deals can be found on Ebay such as this pc, you just gotta search. If you don't you'd better be prepared to pay up when they pop up in an auction for all to see.

I don't understand how it's "ridiculous" when a card reaches a certain price, when in fact it got to that level thanks in large part to the person making the "ridiculous" claim. I guess the other bidder was acting recklessly; the person complaining just really wanted the card.

Never said the final price was "ridiculous", just wasn't worth it to me to pay more than $500 for it. It was worth $1000.00 to someone, congrats on the great purchase, shows how strong the postcard market is becoming. I believe ebay sales to be somewhat accurate, some postcards sell very high and very rarely does one sneak through un-noticed. The whole "people don't bid because of bay fees" thing never factors in. When you want something, who cares about the fees.

Jeff, I know you didn't refer to the bidding as being ridiculous. My post was directed at Phil's comments farther up the thread, not yours.

Sorry but minor league team postcards picturing pre-rookie Hall of Famers routinely sell on e-bay in the $200 - $500 range, including Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel, Stan Coveleski, Dave Bancroft, Dazzy Vance and many others. I would put Frank Baker in a similar class as far as tier level Hall of Famer. I have picked up Tris Speaker and Rogers Hornsby (much higher level HOF'ers) on e-bay for $800 and $900 respectively. Therefore, the Baker postcard last night was not a good value, just a must-have for someone willing to pay "whatever it takes" to get it.

To clarify, I wasn't referring the reasoning in my post to the Ebay fee's. I was was referring to the many collectors who do not even search Ebay anymore for what they collect as much as they once did. I know many board members who have totally banished them as one of their sources anymore. I can also tell you many pc's are still listed in the wrong category and do get missed my many alot. I think a couple high profile pc collectors here will agree if they wish to chime in. I think it's safe to say collectors who saw this pc in the auction last night and were active bidders probably never caught it when listed on Ebay. Just my two cents fellas. Doesn't mean we need to agree.

You're right, Tony. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, it was missed by many (including myself) on e-bay because the seller listed it under Postcards - People rather than Postcards - Sports. Even so, I don't think that it would have topped $500. The writing on the front was also a detractor for me. I know that it pre-dates the divided-backs era and that's why but still would prefer a blank one to that one.

Great auction again Al, those Cycle460s went strong! Happy for the pickup but went quite a bit more then I was banking on.
