Default Mantle

On the back of the two Mantles, Thompson and Robinson, the high number double prints the stitching on the baseball on the back runs right or left. On the Mantle front the e in the auto is full or cut off and the top star line is straight or wavy

There is also a variation with the square box on the front. One is missing the bottom black line, one isn't. Thats the way I distinguish the two.

Interesting card I picked up. Looks like the yellow smeared over the card

Default '52 Topps

Just recently sold my set (407 all red backs + 55 of the Low # black backs + The Page/Sain variations + the #307 Frank Campos Black Star; Frank House Tiger variations, Boone background variations and the Woodling and Schieb "gap in border" cards)

My High numbers were from Poor-Ex or so......not sure how long it took to get that far

Last card was #325 Serena

Default Mea Culpa

I posting this list of variations months ago, I failed to give credit to Mr. Thomas Killeen, who has conducted years of research on 1952 Topps and helped discover some of these variations. He is, perhaps, best known for his discovery of the yellow logo Frank House.

42 Kretlow Black has yellow and peach backgrounds
43 Scarborough Red has Peach and light Peach background (Eyesight??)
43 Scarborough Black has yellow and peach background
54 Kiely Black orange and beige background
55 Boone Black dark olive and light green background
55 Boone Red dark olive and light olive background
80 Wehmeier Black red-yellow and red-orange background
88 Feller clear slats and hazy background

162 Crandall Cream orange and red background
181 Swift Cream split PP in TOPPS on back
225 Baumholtz tan and light brown background (eyesight?)
276 Wilson frame break lower right
295 Cavaretta yellow spot in background
307 Campos partial black star
307 Campos frame break upper left
307 frame break upper left, partial black star
311 Mantle arrows left and right
312 Robinson arrows left and right
313 Thomson arrows left and right
314 Campanella missing "R" in "MAJOR" on back

That's it, with one exception. I believe that the gray back seriws 131-190 has a version that has a white border on the front. I cannot explain it, but i has several examples and I do not believe it is a matter of aging or uneven discoloration of the card stock. But what do I know?

I welcome hearing about any other variations.

Bill

Default 52 Variants

I mentioned this in the other thread, I think all these and maybe a couple more are reflected in the H&S check list for the Super 52 set it recently sold. I think there is still a link to that checklist in the 52 Loes thread now in this forum

Default 52Topps complete ?

I took on the 52T set a few yrs ago...then chickened out and ignored the high#s. Just felt it would have been a lifetime quest.

It was still a challenge..even in beat up shape....finished it...looked at it... decided I wasnt really "in love" with it....sold it to another collector and moved on to something else

I started the set last year low number only 1-310. I'm sitting at 288/310 and decided to also do red/black backs on 1-80 after getting Pafko in both. I have 50/80 on the red and 65/80 on the black with just 4 numbers not represented. I've picked up some good large lots along the way from a couple places and made pretty good money selling my dupes off. I still need the Mays of course and Berra but it's a really nice even VGEX to EX set so far. Along the way, I've picked up (6) of the high numbers in similar condition. They're a bear to get. I have like 29 dupes that I'll list in the BST section tonite or tomorrow for those wanting some singles...........

Default Packs

It is part of a full set and pack run, so no. Plus since I have the set, and upgrading a card or two is not a temptation. Besides, whatever is in there is likely worth less than the unopened pack. The mystery is usually better than the reality

Default 52 topps pack question

How much is a 52 Topps pack worth in PSA 5 and up or GAI 8? I am over 90% complete with the set and I have been looking for a pack to place in my collection. The buy it now price on Ebay is crazy.

Default 52 Packs

Got the one I have several years ago when a bunch of them from a box went up for sale. Prices dropped for awhile but have risen again. I have not followed them specifically recently

Tom,

That is making pretty good progress. Good job.

I also started by buying lots - but held on to my duplicates. I have the first 310 as well as most of the Hi Numbers. I am missing approx. 17 Hi numbered cards for a complete set. Most of my hi numbered cards are EX+ to NM - which was not easy to find on a consistent basis.

I have some variations and only 3 perhaps 4 of the mid series gray backs (misplaced 1 card and can't seem to locate it). I will consider my set complete when I have finished the last of the hi numbered cards. I will continue to work on the variations though.

It is beautiful set, but one I will probably not complete anytime soon due to $$$. However I am working on a mid grade 1953 Topps set, and I am missing only 17 cards to have it complete!

Just playing 20 questions here since I'm pretty sure I'll never even try to complete the set, but it's always left me fascinated.

If there are any scans of some nice cards out there, I wouldn't be against seeing them either!

Thanks guys!!!
A complete set would be crazy.
