Default OLD JUDGE QUESTION N172's

Posted By: Mike

I don't pursue these, and only have one, but my question is, when I look at the PSA Pop. report, I see, for the most part, there are typically only 3 or 4 graded for each card, and quite often 1, are they really that rare? Or are they left to breath the fressh air, outside the plastic?

Others on the board would know more, but to me they are scarce, rare? I collect only Detroit and they don't come up that often. I also think there are a few graded by SGC out there.

Default OLD JUDGE QUESTION N172's

Posted By: Dave

Just from talking to some of the older collectors around where I live that have N172's I would say they don't bother with PSA, or the other grading companies. The Old Man I buy a lot of my T206 commons from has a lot of his older cards in albums and is just fine with that. I only have 1 graded N172 out of all that I own, and it isn't even a numerical grade....it's just authentic. That is also what might deter a lot of collectors....the fact that many Old Judges have been trimmed or are miscut, and PSA won't grade them....so why waste the $20 to have PSA tell me something I already know.

I have 18 different OJ cards, all graded by SGC, except 1 by PSA. I like to get them graded to insure no further damage will happen in the future. I don't think a lot of OJ cards are trimmed. Most problems are on the back of cards from being pasted in books years ago. Although you do find some with the bottoms trimmed off.

Another reason I think many people don't get them graded is that the grade often don't reflect the general appeal of the card. If an OJ has a dark, sharp image, good centering and strong corners, yet has some back damage, it will get hammered by grading companies. Most OJ collectors don't worry that much about back damage.

Actually Joe is probably right....I forgot that most of my Old Judge cards have back damage of some kind or another. I also like think it's a good idea to spend the money on "authentication" from SGC just to protect these type of cards from further damage. I've been told that some of the Pinkish and fading Old Judges will eventually degrade to the point that you can't see them no matter what type of holder the card is in. I don't know if that's true or not, a photographer once told me that.

Thanks. All of that makes sense. Some the same rational expressed may also explain other rare issues, and the seemingly low numbers shown on the pop reports. Such as PSA not showing one 1933 Buttercream -Foxx- being graded. I've owned the two variations, and my gut tells me there are more than my two on the planet. Now I know there are a couple other graders, but the aforementioned thoughts may apply to this issue as well.
