prenup is a bad sign expressing you are concerned about the affection of the spouse rather than what you will put into the relationship! If you love someone you turn over control,not take it so distrust via prenups are not a good way to go into a marriage.it also implies you tolerate the possibility for divorce somewhere down the road. yes,its not card related but the implication of this thread is no longer really about cards either but about Mark and his recent marriage. Wise man once said "marriage is like a tennis match,the idea is to see who will serve the best" Also,"a good marriage is like tea.............the hotter the water,the stronger it gets". Go to it Mark. I've been working at it for over 20 years.

I paid for an original photo which was a modern reprint, I went to Tri Star, and talked two dealers down so that I could buy these:


I already have the Zeenut Burns ( a very cheerful gambler involved with the Black Sox scandal), but it's nice to have two of him. The Marquard is the first T227 i ever had.

And God and Ben willing, someday i will have a website again.

but you can usually find something you want or need if you look hard enough--it is a pretty big show, and just by default, some dealers are going to have nice E cards, T cards and 19th century stuff, though most is poretty mainstream.

You MUST get there when the show opens--or everything good will be picked over. Stands to reason, no? If you don't get off work till 5 or 6, it's still worth getting there before the show closes the first day, if you can make it.

BCD, this is the second show in a row you've been to where you said there was "nothing." Mark M's and Tri Star--you gotta get there when the doors open, and then you'll find some good stuff--not a heap, but some.

the show was horrible, absolutely nothing, i guess i need to start getting there on friday, i think i would of had more fun watching my sister's kids if she had any, there were no t210's, t211's, t215's, t204's, t209's or n173's, maybe i should start setting up at the tristar show myself, if the next show is this bad i don't think i will attend another tristar show in s.f.

to work at the Museum. When I arrived, there were at least 10 guys who had nice N172s--commons. I can't afford to collect commons (except Hoy and Caruthers), so I didn't buy any--but I was tempted. N173...well, that's a little beyond the scope of little old Tri Star...I was very pleased to find the t227 Marquard, and the beautiful Sleepy Bill Burns. Now I have at least two of all the gamblers and players--except Hap Felsch---I only have the photo and one W514...oh, shut up, Julie, nobody's listening...

My lone pickup.......and yes, it was either picked over or there wasn't much there. I found 5 E92s with boatloads of paper loss, and a single E101 and E102 that were in "modified" condition.

Julie,this show was small and it was terrible.You could barely beg someone to find something interesting or desirable to sell you as other's have stated.
This very same show ten years ago was much,much bigger.The entire downstairs area was filled with modern junk and supplies.I noticed Richard was down there for all of 2 minutes before he went back upstairs! I found a N-36 for $110 with no creasing and no paper loss.Jay would love it! Cornell looked through the guys book before I did and missed it! Then told the guy it was worth more as I was asking the seller if the price listed was what I had to pay! ( I had just purchased some N-165's from him minutes earlier) but besides these non-baseball cards,you couldn't find hardly anything most on this board would have wanted. Bill Goodwin had a spotted tie in about ex/mt I noticed but knew it was not worth asking him how much he wanted for it as he would have sold it at the National already~Quality Vintage cards are just getting very difficult to find now.

bcd, is correct about the show, heck the show was much bigger even 3 years ago, bill wanted $8500 for the oj your referring to, 707, wayne varner's shoebox, tik (cow palace) and about 3 other major dealers use to come set up in s.f., where are they now?, staying home on the east coast, hopefully things turn around but i don't see that happening.

but he got sick, and didn't even come out west till much later. There are very few good shows remaining; so what else is new? There used to be a local Berkeley show about a mile from where I live, every week--in 1985. Itwas the only show i ever set up at, and sold $900 worth of cards for the American FRiends Service Committee, for African Fanmine and drought relief. Pretty good for an unknown collector in 1985 with no cards except my own collection, and nobody bought anything older than 1950--except Dennis King, who bought a creased t206 Cobb.

A show where I can find a couple of cards I want, that I can afford, isn't terrible. I once left a show with every cent I came with...now that's terrible!

I think if you compare any show today with what you remember the exact same show was like 10, 5 or even 3 years ago, you will always be disappointed.

Ebay, online dealer websites, the ease of communication through email and scans, etc have all contributed to the deterioration of shows and the deterioration of the buildup of dealer inventory for those "big special" shows - regardless of East or West coast.

Couple that with the simple fact that the majority of big vintage dealers live on the east coast and the amount of time and money it takes for a dealer to travel across the country with cases of cards, several showcases, display racks, banners, etc, the security it takes traveling with all of that stuff, etc, it hardly makes sense anymore.

I don't think that the quality of West coast shows will improve anytime in the forseeable future. The Hawaii shows are gone forever, too.

I know dennis king and his old store by you. I purchased my very first card(other than from a grocery store~) at the time from him. it was about 1972 or so. I am pretty sure he used to come to shows in a 56 Chevy filled with a trunk of cards! And yes jules, I too was at blessed Marc's very first show in 74.

before there was any price guide for them--and boy, did he soak me for some! Some of the ones I refused to buy at the pridce he was asking, I later got from Gary Engel for 1/3 the price...

Did get this nice, tiny bromide (and 4 others), though...
