Default October Pickups

Being a Phillies fan, any Lummis Peanut Butter card has been on my bucket list for a while now. Realistically, with how rarely they come up for sale or auction, I didn't think I would ever own one on my collecting budget. I was an underbidder when the Willie "Puddinhead" Jones Lummis card was included in a lot at Leon's Heritage auction a couple months ago.

I was shocked when the "Puddinhead" Jones card showed up on eBay with a decent BIN. The card just arrived, and I am excited. It is already one of my favorite cards because of how tough they are to find. Thanks to the long-time collector who made the card available.

Thanks, jb67 and Jolly. As you can see, the card was well loved by Leon. I love obscure or hard to find cards or postcards that can't be located on eBay every day of the year. That is what most of my collection is, even if some of the cards might only be worth a couple hundred dollars.

The combined SGC/PSA population list shows only 19 graded Lummis Peanut Butter cards, with no player in the 12-card set having more than three graded copies. There was a Bill Nicholson Lummis Peanut Butter card on eBay for the longest time with a BIN price of $5,750, however.

Very nice 55 Mantle PSA 7, maybe one day I can upgrade mine......thanks to ebay's recent 5x normal ebay bucks promo I was able to affordably pickup up these two cards: first this 55 Mantle....nice t/b centering and color, just some light touches of corner wear and will fit in nice with the rest of my set....now down to just 3 cards on the 55 Bowman set. Then I was able to (again affordably) add my (lucky) 13th PSA 5 1952 Topps Hi # to my set.

Great pickup Matty. Congrats on an oustanding copy of a tough card to find in that type of condition.

Eddie, I'm so very happy for you! What a fantastic, meaningful pickup. That's such a swell photo of Puddinhead anyway, and now to own a Lummis; boy, am I impressed. I can sure see why it's already one of your favorites. With the card's strong eye appeal, you have yourself an equally strong conversation piece.

Thanks for sharing your joy with us. ---Brian Powell

Thanks so much, Brian I am a very small-time collector compared to some of the five and six-figure cards that are shown on here sometimes. I have a list of about a dozen rare cards on my bucket list that I could realistically own one day -- no pipe dreams like a Baltimore News Ruth or a Wagner T206. But I still didn't really expect to ever come across one of my bucket list cards at a decent price. I have missed a couple of my bucket list cards that have appeared on eBay in recent years.

I am really interested to see where the Richie Ashburn Lummis Peanut Butter card currently in the REA auction closes. Sometimes, it is years between a Lummis Beanut Butter card appearing at auction or for sale anywhere, so I am kinda shocked to see an Ashburn Lummis card in the REA auction.

When I exchanged e-mails with the seller of the Puddinhead Lummis card, he wrote to me that he has been collecting for 40 years and he still needs three Lummis Peanut Butter cards to complete the set.

MattyC congrats on landing the 55 Bowman Mantle. That is a great looking card and hard to beat. Was that an Ebay find?

Landed this 69 Mays to add to my Willie collection. I have been looking for a long time to find a nicely centered one that did not break the bank.

Another stellar baseball card with that Mays right there. Finding a 69 with that centering and so square is quite the feat for a collector. 69s are pretty impossible because of that issue.

I can really appreciate a super rare piece like that Peanut Butter card; pieces like that really distinguish a collection.

Thanks regarding the kind words on the 55B. It was an eBay auction that I was sweating, due to the more intense than usual scramble going on these days for Mantles. It was a new high price for the grade I believe, but thankfully not by as much as I feared, LOL.

As I try and build the prettiest Mick Run, card for card, that I can, I continue to be amazed by how effectively rare some Mantles are to find if one is seeking certain attributes. The pop numbers really belie the difficulty.

some awesome and really cool esoteric stuff being posted. Congrats to all!
Here are two recent pickups
Got this one with a $5 discount and a $20 coupon. The coupon was sent to me by ebay. Then I bought $100 gift card for $95 from Paypal. So not bad at all. Wish the centering was better. Ill upgrade eventually. For now am really happy to have it!

And this card has unbelievable eye appeal but has a little wax on the back. Ill take it!

Dan, congrats on the Bench Partridge. BTW I was the underbidder on it. Love the Bench display.

Just added this 68 Willie Mays to my collection.

Picked up a couple of Mantles. The Post Canadian will be up for sale once it arrives. I already have one but could not resist a rare variation at a decent price.

Okay, so not exactly cards but picked up two Mantle related items. The first is a Japanese made flower planter that is supposed to depict Mantle. The resemblance is horrible but the price is right. The second is a game used baseball from Game 7 of the 1952 World Series, where Mantle hit his second World Series home run and the Yankees won the game. I've got a ball from Game 6 so I had to have this one.

With these two pickups, I am only a Pee Wee Reese and a Team Card away from completing my 1956 Dodgers set.

Just received this one in today's mail. Man, I'm having a ton of fun finding these 50's-60's mid grade gems. Centering doesn't get any better on this card.

My God, some beautiful cards this month. How can you not be romantic about baseball? How can you not wax poetic about this hobby?

The thing that warms my heart is seeing these really gorgeous examples that are so much better than their numerical grade would imply. You can't reduce a baseball cards to a series of subgrades. You just can't. It goes to show what an experienced collector can find when they are patient. There are some real gems out there that look so much than higher-graded, more expensive

You guys inspire me. I am beyond ready to start collecting again.

Congrats Mike -- such a tough card to find even close to centered. That's a really nice example befitting your collection!

Default 68 Ryan

I liked the centering on this Ryan RC and it's an upgrade from my PSA 6.

This is my favorite pick up in a long while. Nice '61 Bell Brand Duke Snider. Much nicer than the PSA 7 I had my eye on for quite some time.
