Default I'm forming a Schapira Big Show Circus Parade- anyone want to join?

Posted By: Leon

Acquired this week from a board member in trade (the best kind of collecting!!).

Here we go.....Lets go to the Big Show Circus...ALL aboard!!

Both eyes have been punched out of the animals on the fronts of all 4 boxes, and a mouth slot has been punched out of 3 of the 4 animals. The idea was to cut out a tongue on the dotted lines of the lid and then insert this tongue into the mouth slot, which would also make the "eye dots" line up with the eye holes.

what is this stuff?

and why are there baseball cards at the bottom of the scan?

and where is your quarter (sorry, nickel, given the recession)?

Is this your one OT post for the year?

Does anyone like creamed cauliflower more than cornbread topped with gummy worm purree?

I like applesauce.

OK. Here are my performers for this three ring circus:

If you ever decide to break up the act, let me know. I would be interested in a couple of the performers.

Assuming you aren't being facetious the cards at bottom were put into the boxes. The cards are known as 1921-22 Schapira Big Show Candy cards and are very scarce. Brian V has a nice collection of them but I don't know too many folks with more than 1-2 otherwise. I have seen 1-2 of these boxes before...and believe there was one, with a Johnson card, in the last REA auction. As far as joining the circus goes that is what the side of the boxes say....take care (and my other one from the series)

But definitely the creepiest looking kids' circus toy I've seen from that era. Hand that box to an 8 year old and see if the little fellow runs screaming from the big top...

you can usually assume I don't know what I'm talking about. I am not familiar with that issue whatsoever.

I didn't mean to appear snotty, so I truly apologize if that's how it came off...just trying to be funny on yet another punchy Friday afternoon with a whipsaw market. thanks for the info, though - very helpful to learn something new.

Honest question: when you collect some of the paraphenalia (for lack fo a better word) that are associated with the issue (packs, those boxes, etc), do you display them with the approriate cards? if so, how? or do you wind up keepinga box of "stuff" separate from your cards? with me, for the little I have, it's stuffed away in a box somewhere, and not really appreciated because of space constraints.

Thanks for posting these, very interesting.

The pictures on the sides of the boxes look like the pictures on the side of the modern animal cracker boxes.

You didn't appear snotty at all. I just didn't know if you really knew about these or not. The boxes are kind of creepy, I guess. I have 4 built in display cases in my office at home. My office is basically a no entry zone for my wife and the exterminators......So this is how I display my display pieces.....

Thanks again Lyman and Brian. I knew some members would step up and join in the fun.

Also Lyman- might I ask what animals are listed on the backs of the boxes you have? I think it will be interesting to know how many different Big Show boxes there are. The animals listed on back, are 2 to a box and my four boxes have:

gazelle, wild boar, kangaroo, monkey, bear, tiger, fox, wild cat

regards

Leon,

On the back of the Hippo Box is a panther and a wolf.
On the back of the Elephant Box is a leopard and a lion.

Schapira also made larger candy boxes as this Pak-O-Joys shows. It has the cute novelty of making the eyes of the kid at top with the back flap of the opening, not unlike like the Big Show ones. And we can't forget the regular Schapira Bros Ruth (box) cards either....I have shown this box many times but we do have some new folks that might not have seen this Ruth box and it fits in this thread. It's interesting to note how Schapira really liked to use red, white and blue in their boxes. Very patriotic...I got this Ruth box from Frank Ward, several years ago, before the market took off...Thanks again Frank... regards

but very cool. The animal ones especially look like something out of an old Fleischer cartoon or a Tim Burton movie; I half expect to hear Danny Elfman music when I look at them.
