Ted

Here is one of the few ABs that I own. I bought this one from your buddy Don F. when I was in Cooperstown. Nice wide borders for an AB 350 framed.

Hey good buddy, I thought my Jonesy was a "fat" AB; but, your Lennox appears to be a standard width T206. How, did I miss that card....I usually go thru Don's T206
cards before the Cooperstown Show opens to the public.

Great get, Jantz.

Default Joe DiMaggio / Marilyn Monroe story

Patrick ...... I am glad you asked

Circa 1982, the scene is a New York City BB card show, in which Joe DiMaggio was the signing guest. As many of you old-timers may remember,
show promoters would warn autograph seekers not to present any item for Joe D to sign with Marilyn Monroe on it.

Well, at this show a dealer presented Joe a framed photograph of Joe to sign. Joe recognized this photo and took apart the frame, Joe removed
the cardboard backing and unfolded the other half of this photo. And, sure enough there was a photo of Marilyn....with her real signature on it.
Joe tore up this entire dual photograph in front of this "shocked" dealer, who went berserk.
It's my understanding that Joe, subsequently, reimbursed the dealer for the value of the Marilyn Monroe autograph.

As former sportscaster, Mel Allen, in his distinctive Southern drawl would say........" How's about that ? "

I acquired a few more cards for my AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 sub-set since this thread was last posted. The most significant card is Mr. Cobb.

Hey guys......
This Cobb (front & back) is better looking than these fuzzy scans. My scanner produces great scans of RAW cards and PSA graded cards; but, the scans of SGC graded cards
are usually fuzzy. Does anyone else here have this same problem ?

What a card Ted!!!

CCD sensor based scanners work best for slabbed cards (depth of field). It's likely yours has a CMOS type sensor (great for raw and shallow depth items)

Chris

My scanner is a relatively inexpensive one; therefore, you are probably right that it is CMOS based. The scanners with CCD technology are more expensive.

In any event, what I don't understand is that I get clear scans of PSA graded cards....but, the SGC graded cards are usually fuzzy. What is the difference
between the plastic used by PSA vs. the plastic that SGC uses ?

Ted, Thats an incredible looking Ty Cobb. I'm only 22 cards into the same set and even though I don't have any duplicates to trade, none of my 22 are on your want list. The scanner I use is around 10+ years old and does all scans nice and clear including raw, PSA, SGC, even coins raw and slabed. It's a flatbed Umax Astra 3400 running on Windows XP. It took some time getting it to work since the latest driver is for Windows ME. Not all the options work like auto on and off because of the driver but the scan features all work. I'd like to get a new scanner but afraid of the problem your running into with certain types of scans being fuzzy. Anyways, good luck on the final 15 and congrats on the first 60.

that Cobb is beautiful. If you ever sell it PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know.
Also, no I dont have the scanner problem and I am not sure why you are having it .... that is weird. Have you tried playing around with your scanner settings? That is a strange thing right there.

Anyways .... the Cobb is wonderful Ted. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the compliments regarding the AB 460 Cobb. I have to thank Jay Miller, who remembered me regarding this AB 460 Cobb.

Speaking about AB 460 cards, since I bumped up this thread, I have received two emails regarding deals on acquiring AB 460 cards
for my sub-set.

As Jackie Gleason (The Honeymooners) used to say....Net54er's...."you're the greatest" !

I really appreciate all your responses,

Good luck with this AB challenge. You'll find out that a dozen AB 460 subjects [Crandall, Devore, Duffy, Ford, Gandil, Geyer, Hummel, McGraw (glove), Pfeffer, Sheckard,
Tannehill, Wheat] are considerably more available than others from the 460-Only series. These guys must have been Double-Printed, or perhaps Triple-Printed.

And, I would say that mostly all the 28 subjects from the 350/460 series with AB 460 backs are quite tough to find.

Some AB cards are tough; and, other AB cards are less tough. For example, the Del Howard card is a tougher AB (only 2 are graded).
Both of these are PSA 2; and, there are no SGC graded cards of Del Howard.

of Eddie Collins.

I have the 3rd one with an AB 350 back, it is barely Vg (not graded). I have looked for some time to upgrade this Collins card.
It is indeed another example of one of the tougher ones with the AB 350 back. Let's see if anyone else here has this Collins ?

Hi Ted,
Be careful using "Pop Reports"... I have over 100 AB's graded by PSA but none have the back listed.... I also have quite a few Raw cards...

Here are a few:

Green is my favorite color. Maybe that's why AB has always been my favorite back. TOUGH, but not impossible like Uzit or Drum.

I know what you mean......I have some cards graded by SGC in their early start-up days that don't appear on their current POP report data.

Speaking about SGC grading, maybe you can figure this out (because I cannot). I think my Matty should warrant a "60" and my Gandil a "40" (or "50").....instead of a "60".
Both are equally off-center; and, backs are clean on both of these cards.

What's your opinion on this ?

Thanks for your consideration,

TED Z

Hi Ted,
I can't answer your questions.... But, I can tell you that PSA has been very tough on AB's for quite sometime... SGC used to be more lenient on centering, but may have changed recently.... I haven't had anything graded in quite sometime.... Be well Brian

Thanks Mike.... I bought it raw several years ago.... It's one of my favorites.

Default And, then there are the "Exclusive 12".......

It is evident that these 12 subjects from the 460-only series are considerably more available than most T206 AMERICAN BEAUTY cards. My theory is that these 12 subjects were
Triple-Printed on a sheet of their own. Such as this simulated 36-card sheet shown here.

This printing pattern is replicated for the SOVEREIGN 460 and Red HINDU cards of these 12 guys. Furthermore, these 12 subjects differ from their "cousins" in the 460-only series
with respect to other tobacco advertising backs. Therefore, I refer to them as the "Exclusive 12". For more info regarding these 12, check-out this thread............

Default Show off your AMERICAN BEAUTY's....T205's and/or T206's

Recently acquired a few more cards for my AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 run. I am 8 cards away from completing this 74-card T206 subset
The two Seymour cards are the result of winning both simultaneously in two different auctions. I didn't want to risk loosing Seymour,
so I bid on this card in both auctions that night....figuring on getting one of them....but, to my surprise, I won both.

This Frank Smith (Chicago and Boston) is one of the tougher AB 460 cards to find. I purchased this one for 2 reasons, it is an upgrade
in my set.....and, I could not pass it up since it is a double (same) name card.

Hey guys....let's see some more of your AMERICAN BEAUTY's....T205 or T206.
