Ok can anyone give me information on these sets.

A super high grade Jackson just sold in the H&S auction for what I thought was a super cheap price. I am very sorry I didn't bid. However I have seen almost none of either of these jackson cards but they don't seem expensive.

They aren't even listed anywhere on the PSA site, the card or the set. Is this something that people just dont' care about?

I realize the cards aren't the best looking and this obviously isn't from Jackson's playing days, but neither it the 1940 Playball and that brings good money.

Any help on the set or locating a jackson would be great.

Thanks

James Gallo

i don't know much about the set but what i do know is that it was a hobby set,it is unnumbered,over-sized and blank backed. all these factors play into a sets lack of popularity with most collectors.

For my continuing education, what is a "hobby set?"

it was a set of cards sold/given away? by the trading post a very early sports collectors pub (1940's). so it wasn't a mainstream set sold over the counter so to speak.

So does anyone collect this set at all.

Nothing listed on PSA and hardly anyhting on SGC yet....

It has some key players in it like Jackson, Ruth, Williams, DiMaggio as well as super early cards of Berra, Rizzuto, and Musial. There are even several players that have few cards but are in the HOF like Heinie Manush.

Thoughts?

I realize it was put out by a collecting magizine and not a gum or tobacco comapny but does that make THAT much of a difference??

My Opinion, they (Sports Exchange) are the TCMA of the late 1940's. They are a "collectors issue" and thats why they suffer price wise.

I sort of like them..... they and the R346 cards, along with the Exhibits are still very cheap, especially for HOFers in average condition.

I have a few W602's, including a scarce ad back card. I pick them up now and then as long as I can find them for only a dollar or two.

The minis were issued in sheets, with the intent that they be cut apart. I think that's another reason why the prices are low. I happen to like the minis. The Spahn is especially nice.
