Default Cobb Auto

What are your thoughts on this lot? I am concerned with the C and with the association with Stump . . .

Can't comment on the autograph, but Weiss is a reputable auctioneer.

Stump did Cobb's signature at the end? Was it more "secretarial". or an intentional forgery?

Stump forged a ton of Cobb material, holographic and otherwise, and pumped it out to collectors in quantity. Halper bought a bunch of it, including the famed false teeth.

It was absolutely an intentional forgery.
He dumped a bunch of it on the hobby through a very well known dealer.

So am I to assume that not only did Stump forge the signature, but he also forged the entire letter to himself? Yikes, that's bad news.

Richard, what are the telltale characteristics of a Stump forged Cobb? I am very curious to know just for enlightenment. Thank you.

It's sad that despite the GREAT ( and IMO, the GREATEST and most fascinating) history of Baseball and the Collecting hobby, that so much is about Operation Bullpen, Al Stump forgeries, Roach's corner, etc, and the sport itself w the Black Sox, the Cobb/Speaker incident, Rose betting, etc. Still, IMO, its the greatest game/hobby in the world, and I have a never ending love for it. .

Thanks, Jeff. Great article. I have a Cobb check from 1947. I'm going to look at it closer now, since the article says that Mrs. Cobb was occasionally signing for him in that era.
