Default Ullman Postcards

Posted By: Paul

This is another one of those cards that I am going to regret not buying -- an Ullman TEAM postcard of the CUBS.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260050409485&ssPageName=STRK:MEDW:IT&ih=016

Though you can't tell from the scan, the seller told me that the name plate at the bottom has the words "National League Champs 1906" in it. Someone then wrote "1906" over the name plate.

Have any of you ever seen anything like this before? All other catalogued Ullman's are individual players, and all are from the World Champion Giants. It seems to me there are a few possibilities here:

1. Ullman made individual player cards of the World Champion Giants, but decided that the team which lost the World Series merited only a single team card.

2. Ullman also made a team card of the Giants, but it has never been found.

3. Ullman made a Giants team card that has never been found and individual Cub cards that have never been found.

I'm kind of leaning toward No. 3. Any thoughts?

Default Ullman Postcards

I have seen 2 of the Cubs team in the last 7 years. (as usual, I was the under bidder on this one). At the time I saw the first one (about VG) in 1999 I wasnt into the Ullmans, but always remembered them because of the wood border. Back in 1999 SCD only listed one postcard in this set (Donlin), so it was no big deal to me that there was a Cubs Team, since I knew for fact the Checklist was way off on how many were in the set. About the same time I saw the Cubs team in 1999, I picked up a group of 4 for $40 ea. (C.Mathewson, Ames, Donlin, McGinnity) and have followed them closely ever since, watching the checklist grow. I have always thought I'd see another of the Cubs team, but it took about 7 years til another showed on eBay. In my opinion I believe it is even rarer than the NY "Worlds Champions" cards.

Its funny why a NY Postcard Company would print a Chicago Team, but not one of their Giants???? I think the Cubs team was issued a year after the NY cards, maybe right after the 1906 World Series. While the NY cards were issued right after the 1905 World Series (or early 1906 season). The Iron Arm McGinnity actually has the Champion Flag in the background, and some players are wearing uniforms that say "Worlds Champions" on the front.

It is doubtful that there is a Giants team Ullman card. It is possible, I guess, that there may by a White Sox team card since the White Sox were the American League Champions in 1906 and in fact won the World Series.

The individual Giants cards of 1906 were for the World Champions of 1905.

Now, if I can get a Harry (Henry) Mathewson, Donlin and Gilbert my collection will be complete. (Shameless plug )

I'm starting to agree with Steve M. With a "League Champs" Cubs card for 1906, it makes sense that there should be a "World Champs" White Sox card for 1906 as well. There probably doesn't have to be a whole lot of consistency between the 1905 Giants set and the 1906 set, which would indicate that there may not be any individual players in the 1906 set.

I wonder why the Cubs card should even be included in the "set".
