Default Unidentified 19th century boxing card

I need some help trying figure out what the Billy Mclean boxing card is.
I think the name on the card says B Mclean (in script). The number 20 is also written to the left of him but there is no advertising on it and the back is blank.

I cant find any images of other cards like this so I am thinking it may be rare, but I just dont know.

Is anyone familiar with this issue?

Thanks, you can call or email me

Not familiar with the issue, but if it is Billy McLean, he was also the first NL umpire I think.

If you expand the image the name to the right of the boxer looks like "B Madden"

David,

Probably not much help, but here is the only B. McLean listed on BoxRec that fought close to that time period (light weight). Not to impressive a career .....

That's all I got, Scott

The card is part of the N172 set, with the tobacco advertising cut off the bottom. The boxer is Billy Madden.

That's not the N172 Set, it is the Lorillard Set, but that settles the matter-it is Madden, not the first umpire. The card Dave has is not an Old Judge or Gypsy Queen, trimmed or not.

Yeah I was just using the Lorrilard for id purposes because it has a pic and name together.

Spitballing here: SF Hess w/the ad whacked off? There is a Madden in the set but I don't have a scan.

Adam-Have you ever seen an SF Hess boxer with the name to the right of the image like this card (and also a number)?

I just picked up an SF Hess boxer this past week (Reagan). This unidentified boxer doesn't match SF Hess formats I'm familiar with. This is a good question for Brent B. (I'll forward this thread to him).

It is Billy Madden. I also have one just like it. Same photo used in his SF Hess issue I believe but I’ll have to check when I get back home but definitely not apart of the N332 issue.

When I originally acquired mine I thought maybe it was trimmed down from a larger piece but when as I inspected it it seemed like it was issued in that size and was not trimmed. I still had my doubts though... but now that a second has been found its becoming more interesting as to how this may have been issued. I believe I have a scan of mine on my computer and will add it in the next couple of days...

No but if they pirated the image I’d not be surprised to see something like that.

Looks like Brent has somewhat solved the mystery.

Thanks for the help on this one, Brent. Hope you are well. I will never forget that about 10 yrs ago you offered me some toothpaste as I had left mine at home when at the National. I am indebted.

Wow! Great to see a boxing topic on the board - there is also a non sports book out there showing some or similar boxing issues that tell about the size and issues as some non sports issues have a lot of boxers mixed in - boxing gets hidden some times - and just takes time to figure it out

Check out the boxing section of this board. It it under the ‘baseball’ in the pictorial menu above.
