What's the best card in your collection, but in the worst shape? I've attached my best/worst two. Whose next?

A cetain member of this board has CLEANED ME OUT OF TRUE BEATERS. I remember telling Mark M about a trade, and he said "Let me get this straight. Your'e trading a Ruth, a Johnson, and some other stuff for a Cracker Jack Marquard?"

"Mark--you'd have to SEE the cards to understand their true worth..."

This here card has a GREAT HISTORY. It's the scarcest Ruth in the '35 Goudey set.. Anyway, see those few lines just above the center back? There's a big "1934" (incorrect) in pencil, real deep, there, which I erased as well as I can. The story-- I can't remember anymore. All I know is, for the longest time, whenever I borrowed $300 from a friend, I would send him this card. When I repaid it, he would send it back. Once I noticed that he hadn't even taken the card out of its rappings! So after that, I just borrowed $300, and the card stayed home.
It has great sentimental value...
Here are my ex-beaters! Wonder who has them now?

I don't have enough cards to have really good cards in bad shape. Just a few commons in really bad shape.

My thanks to Julie for saving me the trouble of posting my card. My poorest condition card is my Standard Biscuit Ruth, shown in Julie's scan. Julie, it is now in a happy home. Despite all its flaws, it is a Ruth as a pitcher with the Red Sox, something I've always wanted to own.

JAY, WILL YOU TRADE YOUR THORPE?????

The Thorpe goes absolutely nowhere. There was a thread a month or so ago asking what one card would you wish for and my wish was for a m101-5 Thorpe. A very kind lurker sold the card to me along with a number other cards I needed/wanted. I've had the card in possession for about a week. No way I am about to part with any time in the foreseable future.

Don't have a scan to post, but it has paste on the back and a nice rat nibble on the top border...but it is family. Will be on the front cover of the second edition of my boxing card book (shameless plug).

with some sort of excess stuff on the back, and right through the excess stuff ran a worm track! It was a trip, and I don't know why I got rid of it. It's a nice archiological piece, if nothing else.

Here's a bug eaten OJ that I picked up on ebay recently... It's an OJ HOFer so I wont complain too much... the bugs didn't get the back so at least the back is clean... I hope the bug enjoyed it's meal... out of the batch of cards the seller had, this is the only bug eaten one... at least the bugger chewed himself a good card...

enough damage actually done to cards by bugs for them to be called so particularly. Is it wet or dry, indoors or outdoors, that attracts them?

I am going to have to get me a scanner,
I am the proud owner of the most wrinckled, cracked, chipped, and anything else that can happen to a T205 Ty Cobb. It is in such bad shape that it makes Dave's Parent example look like it came right off the presses. I love this card. I carry it with me in my wallet at all times. It makes for a very interesting conversation piece. I can always show it as an example of what can happen to a card if you do not take care of it, and if it were mint it would be priceless, but as is it's worth a few bucks.

Rick,

I'd be willing to guess that my T205 Cobb is uglier than yours. I still love it like I would a NrMt T205 Cobb.

the yukky end of my worst T202.

I guess somebody was eating candy while looking at it, but my favorite thing is the seasick color of Cobb's face.

I know it isn't full of creases and tears--well, one tear--but you've got to realize, there are 6 Cobbs in the set, and MOST people make sure that the Cobb cards are the best in the set of course--not the worst.

I starated to post a picture of my Cobb T205 as worse than yours, and realized that yours is really the worse. Mine's still not that good.

I challenge any of you to come up with a card in worse
condition. Even if you intentionally try to destroy a
card, I don't think it can be as bad as this.

I needed this card for my Luque collection and believe
it or not, actually paid for it. Fortunately, I have
since been able to upgrade with the example below it.

Getting a card I needed for my Luque collection: $10

Upgrading later: priceless

-Ryan

I have a Diamond Stars Red Ruffing that actually looks pretty good, in terms of corners, borders, creases, etc. Only problem is it looks like somebody went to the bathroom on it. The card has an almost uniform brownness to it. I'm selling it now that I bought a nicer 1933 Goudey, in VG-EX condition.

Judge,
Your Cobb is a beauty, but I still got you beat. Picture will follow soon. I promise.
drum roll please.
Bill-- I like your Brown, hell the guy was missing a finger for god's sake what's a little crease anyway.
Brian, I am envious if your Johnson and Matty are your best cards with the worst condition. You must have a hell of a collection.
And Ryan,
From what I can tell, it is not wise to put a challenge out to this group. Someone will find that special card that looks like it spent it's life on the floor of the outhouse waiting to be discovered. Then and only then will we be able to see one challange for the title of "best card, worst conditon"

Hi Julie,
Your right! I like showing off my rare backs, but both of these cards were graded 1 by PSA!!!!!! Both are undergraded by at least 1 grade and maybe 2 in Johnsons case. I have uglier cards, but I was trying to stay on theme.............. Be well Brian

PS I'll post my first vintage(1956) card later...... It's a beauty??

Ugly enough? I might be able to do better, but that Johnson portrait Jay (?) has almost has to win. Well, either that or the torn in 2 pieces Cobb that was up a few weeks ago.

Several board members have cards that could seriously compete with all that's posted here--I know because I sold the cards to them!

(I don't want to brag, but this is my territory we're treading upon here--I've even got Andy B's old N172 Mack, which I'll post here someday.)

I just went through my website last week deleting files with abandon, so I couldn't find much, but here's something, anyway...

Unfortunately I can't find a scan of a '57 Mantle I gave away a few years ago -- it came from the scrap heap of the '57 uncut sheet find maybe five years ago, but this Mantle was maybe 60% intact, with a bonus 10-20% of some other card. Healthily stained, of course, with some scuffing and creasing for good measure. I was tempted to write on it, if only to go for the cycle.

In my post I hope you understand that "beat" means mine is much uglier, as I'd rather have a Matty portrait than a Brown.

Hi Bill,
I agree your Brown "beats" my Matty Portrait, but the scan of the White Hat Matty doesn't do it justice, it looks like it was folded several times. In fact it looks like an accordian, and may beat your Brown.
Hopefully We can find some nicer Hindu's in the Future.

Be well Brian
