Default O/T The Differences Between Net54baseball and Facebook?

Many times I have been asked the question about how this forum is different than the FB groups with vintage cards? I am on FB a little bit and, to me, it just seems like a whole different experience here. Other's thoughts...

and a very scarce horizontal R315 strip...

100% agree that it is a different experience. Maybe it is the groups I'm in or the separation here, but I find this site more informational and facebook more transactional. One of my biggest pet peeves with Facebook is the way posts disappear either from the original poster or a mod deleting it. You post something someone doesn't agree with or call someone out on something like a fake and within 10 min all the posts disappear. I also really appreciate the long history here. I know I still constantly reference back to old posts on this forum from 5, 10, 15 years ago to get info and I can't see that happening with any facebook groups.

Ignorance is bliss from my standpoint. I have no Facebook anything and won't ever have one.

So this place wins by default!

Cheers,

I rarely use Facebook. I got the personal account years ago so I could open a business account to promote my business. Now I mainly use it to learn about products. Usually their FB page is way better that their web page when needing info.

The big difference for me is: 99.9% of the time when I get a message from another Net54 member I am happy to get it. Most messages I get on FB are from people I have not seen for years and I would really like to extend that not communicating with them streak as long as possible.

I appreciate both that there is a policy against political posts here and that there is not such a policy on Facebook as it's important for me to engage in discussions of [redacted]. That said, though I probably spend more time on Facebook than on Net54, I don't spend any of my Facebook time in sportscard-related groups.

For me, I enjoy talking about cards on FB and it has greater outreach than NET54.

However, there are far more trolls/bad members on FB than on NET54.

So it is a give and take.

I gave up Facebook for lent and didn't really miss it. The best part of Facebook is videos with cute puppies

Regarding card groups. The difference is;

1. Leon. Your vetting of membership, kicking out scammers, and doing what is necessary when things get political or ugly (same thing?). Some FB groups have this, but not all

2. Not sure the knowledge that is here is on any Facebook forum

3. The UI, with different sections is much better, the ability to search. On Facebook I see a post in the AM when I am sitting in my office, I wipe by butt and wash my hands, and I can't find the post!

If you could add a section for cute dog videos ...

I appreciate the actual discussions on here and find that there appears to be a hell of a lot more knowledge of cards and the hobby than there is on Facebook. Not saying it's not there on FB, but if it is it gets drowned out by the multitude of people who apparently are lacking something in their life and like to just be jerks to others.

I don't post/comment much on here but do read nearly all of the threads. I've learned a lot since coming to this forum and have done a few deals both buying and selling. I can't say I've learned anything from any of the groups on FB I'm a part of. For the most part, I just like to see people's pickups in the FB groups. Haven't done any buying/selling on there and really can't see myself ever doing so.

Oh, and I also appreciate that people on here seemingly still prefer to use scanners instead of a phone pic.

I have no social media accounts. Does Facebook use those ridiculous @ signs or is that Twitter?

Never been on that Book of Faces, and don't see why I ever will be.

There is nothing lacking here that would drive me to look someplace else.

For the most part Facebook is Emotionally Driven....Net54 has more intellect and wisdom in cards and collecting:-)

Both have their ups and downs.

on FB only a few messages pop up and most get lost in the abyss. Also, the layout focuses more on show and tell and less on actual discussion. I prefer the board where you can go through as many old threads as you want and easily see and reply to the discussion

Both use them but in slightly different ways. You're most likely thinking of Twitter. They also both use # signs.

Exactly. People sharing their whole lives, from their marriages and relationships to what they had for lunch and did today. I don't get it. I'm not obsessively private, but I wouldn't dream of broadcasting most of this stuff, or want to read it about anyone else. The public posting of messages to spouses is the most perplexing though. Much appalling grammar too. And no I don't read it, this is surmise from things people show me lol, or from news/sports online.

I use Facebook extensively besides reading this site regularly. The two experiences are wildly different.

This board clearly skews older in many ways - the items collected, the physical age of the members, the experience of the collectors, and so on. The knowledge for anything pre-2000 or so is incredibly deep here. It doesn't take long to get an answer if you're asking about some obscure 1916 postcard that only has 3 exemplars - and someone here probably owns one of the three. You won't find that on Facebook.

This board also has a superior structure for promoting actual discussion. Posts don't appear in a random order and they rarely disappear.

Facebook has the advantage of having a much larger audience. And the knowledge on newer products is far higher.

But the structure of Facebook stinks. Posts appear in seemingly random order, show up as new 3 days after they were posted originally, and so on. You never quite know what you're getting.

Like I said, I use Facebook extensively. Not so much for cards - though I'm a member of some groups - but for personal interaction with friends. I rarely post on my Facebook wall anymore but I am very active in a handful of groups and have made many, many good friends through them.

Facebook and Instagram seem to be more about curating your life experience to convince other people for some reason how special your existence is. Whenever I see these people who post about every meal they ate or ever place they've gone or every show they've seen I immediately think they must be very unfulfilled people. "Here is the fantastic piece of apple pie I had last evening. . . ." Really? "Here I am cooking bacon. . ." Huh? If you go see a good show, who cares that other people know you went to it. Live in the moment. Saw a great show a few weeks ago and people were filming and posting it as it was happening. Weird. Like the "atta boys" from other people were more important than the artist on stage.

There's precious little boasting on 54 about what someone owns. It's largely not a dick measuring contest. It's really about sharing information. That's the biggest difference for me from other forms of social media.

I'm in discussion groups on Facebook. FB seems more like a live conversation (chatty) and Net54 seems more like an archives of knowledge.

Very different experience for me.

Net54 is much more of a community...I know many members here and have complete faith in any transactions here. I mean there was the mexican cartel ruth...but aside from that...it's been a smooth ride.

I'm in a few facebook groups that have a similar feel to net54...it's a selective group with quality, active members. Paypal goods and services is the standard on FB.

On the other hand there are more kinda shitty groups with people who are uneducated, looking to gouge, too lazy to do any work. I've been ripped off once on facebook...but I'll ask for a phonecall with a large purchase.

I use the Facebook Groups,

"$100 and Under Pre War, T206, Tobacco Cards" and
"Harmon's Old-Time Baseball Cards - Buy-Sell-Trade & Show Them Off"

to buy and sell; higher end for the latter. These groups, I settled on following recommendations from members here at net54. A little variety never hurts.
I have accumulated mounds of knowledge from members of net54 over the years; and love the depth of interaction this forum provides me.

The value that net54 and above FB Groups give me; bridges the gaps between local shows.

I do not participate in any SM sites. Looked at many FB groups for cards and there is NFW I would ever trust doing business there. I do not feel the same about this site. Count me in as one who thinks Leon does an excellent job keeping us all in line! Not sure there is a comparison for the amount of experience and knowledge that is here. My sense was that the FB groups are full of a bunch of 18 to 35 year olds who each have 2 phones and 7 apps running 19 hours a day.

If anyone knows of a good book that has been published with photos of the faces of old time baseball players, please tell. I would love to know about just such a facebook.

Brian, this old fart truly enjoys your frequent humor, as well as your frequent attempts at humor. Keep it going! (Hopefully, I won't receive lots of nasty PMs for encouraging you!)

If not for Facebook I wouldn’t have learned about these armadillo eggs. They are absolutely delicious! I love this site way more than Facebook except for the ease of posting pictures from your phone. Other than that small item I’ll take this site all day everyday over Facebook.

Thanks Val, but you definitely don't want to be in the same room when I get that old fart humor started.

FB for me is in waves, but could take it or leave it. Strange I know when someone I went to high school with that I could care less about 35 years later goes to the grocery store or what they had for dinner. WHO CARES. If I wasn't into bird hunting I would not ever go...

As for cards...I've seen a few groups but have zero interest there. Just doesn't seem like a place to discuss, let alone buy/trade/sell...just my opinion. I also don't like to post any of my collection there, not really into advertising my valuables while my wife lets everyone know when we are out of town vacationing!

My sense was that the FB groups are full of a bunch of 18 to 35 year olds who each have 2 phones and 7 apps running 19 hours a day.
The millennial and Gen-Z crowds mostly departed Facebook for Instagram and TikTok over the past few years. Now it's largely a middle-aged/Gen X site.

Net54 qualifies as a social media site. Beyond card discussions, there has been a thread where people showed photos of their dogs and there is a watercooler section where people talk about all sorts of topics.

An interesting aspect for me about Facebook is I have Russian and Ukrainian friends and colleagues in Russia and Ukraine who post about their personal experiences in the current war. One is in the besieged city of Kherson with her family, and another is a Ukrainian who was living in Moscow and fled to France.

Facebook is what you make of it.

I've purchased a few cards off of Facebook through a group run by Daniel Harmon. I've had nothing but positive experiences but in practically all cases, it's very transactional. I have made some nice connections on there though, with a handful of individuals, but they are few and far in between.

Here is a much more social place, I feel like I am part of a community and though all of us recognize the business side of the hobby, all of us seem to have a very healthy appreciation for it as well. I also feel like I've developed a stronger connection with a general community and members of the hobby on here, as opposed to on Facebook.

All in all, two very different places. It treat the facebook listings, as I would treat eBay listings in most cases. While the main focus might be cards here, the real treat is the community that Leon and so many others have built. Certainly made the time during the pandemic much more bearable.

I'll also say this much, one of my favorite things to do when I wake up, or when I come home from work, is hitting the "new posts" button, to see what is going on here. Feels like walking into a bar, where it's nothing but the regulars that you always enjoy seeing!
