Default 1948/49 Cleveland Indians ID Help Needed

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley

I apologize if this is too late for some but I picked up a few items containing the following images and wanted a little help with the identification of the players. All would have been on the 1948 or 1949 Cleveland Indians teams. Since the catcher for the team was Jim Hegan, I figure the catcher was him, but need id on others. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The top one looks like Lou Boudreau and the 4th one down I think is Bob Lemon.

My best guesses were
1. Boudreau
2. Not sure
3. Not sure (Boudreau or coach possibly?)
4. Lemon
5. Vernon
6. Hegan

What do you think?

My initial reaction was that the top one is not Boudreau but rather Ken Keltner, and after checking a 1948 World Series program, I feel better about that assumption. Boudreau had much darker, thicker eyebrows than the first player pictured here. Plus, that fielding stance (I know it's posed) just doesn't seem to fit him. I say Keltner.

I'm still checking the others, though I agree that No. 4 is Bob Lemon.

While I am asking I might as well show what they are, it might help with the id. They are from the 1949 Vis-Ed Magic Dial Set. The group even came with the viewer its box is a little beat up though. I was a little disappointed there was no Paige in the group though.

Thanks for the responses thus far.

Rhett,

I dug out my Big League Viewer, and along with the reels and viewer found the sheets that came with the reels. On the sheets are a checklist of all the players available.

Regarding the second player from the top: I look at him and think he's a pitcher. The only pitchers listed in the series are Bob Feller, Satchel Paige, Bob Lemon and Gene Bearden. We know player No. 2 isn't Lemon or Paige, and I think we would agree it's not Feller (because the image isn't autographed), so I'd say it's Bearden. And comparing that image to Bearden's in the programs I have, there's a pretty good resemblence.

EDITED TO SAY, well, I guess No. 2 isn't a pitcher!

Edited again to add image of checklist:

With the link, I was able to match a couple of the shots from the single frame set to the Dial set and it appears the players are as follows...
1. Ken Keltner (a pic matched to the registry card)
2. Joe Gordon (also matched a frame from the dial)
3. Lou Boudreau (again matched the image to the registry set)
4. Bob Lemon
5. Mickey Vernon
6. Jim Hegan (matched an image)

Thanks guys,
-Rhett
