Default Photo ID Help Needed -- Minneapolis Millers?

Posted By: RobertS

Hi all--

This photo is being represented as the Minneapolis team of the old American Association. I have been looking at old team logos, photos of Nicollet Park, etc. in an attempt to corroborate this claim.

Any thoughts out there as to whether the ID is correct?

Thanks!

Is there a studio name on the cabinet? Doesn't look like any Millers logos I've seen, but then again, I haven't seen them all. It would also be good to know where the phot came from, i.e. a family that lived in Minneapolis in the era, etc

Stew Thornley of the local SABR group in the Twin Cities wrote a book a while back called "On to Nicolett"The Glory and fame of the Minneapolis Millers". Available in Amazon I believe. I suppose your only hope on this would be to pick up the book, and see if you can find matching uni's, hats, faces etc. etc. I used to be in that SABR group with Stew, and I can assure you, the book will be informative, and accurate. As Stew is a stickler for detail. I haven't read this book. I should have, but just didn't. I probably will now...Good Luck

I've been to his Web site and it doesn't have any photos. Unfortunately, by the time I could get the book from Amazon, I think the photo will be gone...!

I will probably buy it anyway....

I'm no Minneapolis Millers expert, but, offhand, I would think an important minor league team would have more players. The MLB team used the Millers to train and test the talent. I've seen a few Millers team photos over the years, and they were always posed formally, like a Major League team, on the field or in the stands.

The Millers were essentially a AAA team, next step was the bigs, and had loads of future Hall of Famers and stars over the years (Rube Waddell, Campanella, Mays, Ted Williams, Ray Dandridge, Carl Yastremski, Hoy Wilhelm etc etc). There likely were future MLB payers in most to all team photos.

You forgot McCovey and Cepeda I used to ahve a run of Millers and Saints team photos from 1930-60. They came from a former umpire who used to work the Millers and Saints games. The 1951 photo I had did not feature Mays as the photos weres give aways for the radio picture day sponsored by the radio braodcaster. Mays only played early in the year.

This is the only one I still have a scan of. The ones featuring Dandridge, McCovey, Yaz and Williams were all signed. The sigs were obtained by me, not the original owner.

Jeez. Has to be the strangest tale in the Miller's history.

The number of players is also causing me to think twice, David, but then I saw the photo also posted above by Frank.

For me the setting is troublesome -- you typically see school teams posed outdoors on steps like this.

In sum: I'm waiting for more answers from the seller (non-eBay) before I pull the trigger, even though the price is low.

Thanks for all the help so far, guys...

The other thing that worries me is that I can't recall seeing a uniform that had just an M logo. They always seemed to have unis with Minneapolis on it.

I didn't even notice the sig at first and was going to say it looks like a young Ted Williams in a Millers uniform

Naw...he looks more like a guy who had the potential to hit .406. Miss three years of his prime time, and still hit, oh I don't know, maybe about 521 home runs....looks like he could be a star. No steriods....and he was patriotic. Let's take a chance on him. I think he'll work out just fine.

David

Ted Williams' mother was of mexican descent, with her parents from Mexico.
