Default (just for fun) Anyone spend more $ on 1 card than a brand new car?

Posted By: anthony

I have this discussion quite often with non collector friends who honestly believe I am crazy for spending $4k on a single baseball card. After explaining that $4k is nothing to some people, I thought I'd ask a fun question.

Outside of the obvious Honus Wagner that I know a few of you guys have, Has anyone here spent more money on a single card than the brand new car you recently bought? Name the card or price (not both unless you want to) and the type of car or price.

for me no, the most I spent on a single card is $4k and the most on my car was $30k.

There are a few cards which I will spend four figures to obtain. But I do not have specific plans to accomplish that objective within my lifetime.

Yes.

The most I ever spent on a card was over 10K
The most I ever spent on a motorcycle was 8K
The most I ever spent on a bicycle was 5K
The most I ever spent on a car was 4.5K

The biggest rip-off was the car. I hate cars.

Paid around 2500 for a Paul Dean Rice-Stix on the BST.

Paid 1400 for my 1990 Crown Vicoria (bought on ebay!)

Dan, you spent 5K on a bike?
The most I ever spent on a card wouldn't buy me 4 seats in my car.

Ive never spent more on a card than a car, but if I had that conversation with my friends, I would point out that my cards have increased in value and my cars have decreased in value during my ownership and let them decide which was the better purchase.

Of course, I cant ride a card to work.

The most I've spent on a card is less than 1/15th of the most I've spent on a vehicle. And I don't go hogwild buying vehicles!

I would if I could!

most money spent on a card: $500
most money spent on a car: $18k
(the car gets me to work, where I can get the money to buy more $500 cards someday!)

I have lived in Manhattan for the past 32 years.

I bought one used car 17 years ago and spent less
than $8000. Gave it up 2 years later.

Have spent well over $40,000 on a card on several occassions.

But in NYC that is well less than a friend of mine's monthly
mortgage payment.

There's no place like the Big Apple.

My first car cost $100 - a 1951 Plymouth in 1967. So I have spent more than the cost of a car on cards - but not more than a new car.

Most spent on a card $898
Most spent on a car $27,000.
Money owed on the card 0
Money owed on the 2001 Z28 as of the 12th of this month 0!!!!!!!!!!
Money now available per month to buy cards with? $471.55

People said it was a million dollar wound. But the government must keep that money, cause I ain't never seen a penny of it.

Many years ago.

Bought a brand new vehicle in February, the card in April of that year.

Never realized it, until reading this thread.

My most expensive card ($1750) isn't anywhere close to what I've spent on even the cheapest new car I've ever bought or the dough I've dropped so far on two college educations (about $200,000) with one daughter to go.

$1,600 M116 Johnson (sold it a month later for $1,650)

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

$1,250 T206 Cobb Green background (not including the price to cross it from GAI to SGC) -- still have it

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

$999.00 T206 Demmitt STL -- still have it

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Everything else was under $1,000, mostly well under $1,000.

I have been collecting for over a quarter of century, and I would hate to depend upon the transportation that $180 would provide.

While I've written larger checks for groups of cards, I broke a personal record for a single card this morning when I paid for the '38 Goudey DiMaggio I won in last night's Heritage auction. $3300.

I try and lease my cars - the sticker price on the one I'm driving now was $26,000, I believe.

but I've spent more on various Mastro auction lots than on my new '91 Toyota pickup, new '97 Mustang or new '02 Nissan pickup....and spent a lot more time debating the vehicle purchases.

Kind of weird now that I think about it! ...to think of all the cards I could have bought instead of wasting it on those new vehicles

Sorry, I went on vacation and didn't remember this thread. Don't have a picture handy, but here is a description of it :

Mine is set up for long distance triathlons and is as smooth a ride as you can find. The graphite deadens the vibrations better than my Sportster.
