Y'know, it's not worth it to me to have the house overrun with Topps, even for a Wagner!...wait a minute--packs of WHAT?

That’s it I’m suing these bastards! Seriously I tried this stunt years ago and all it led up to was a bunch of paperwork. Still trying to pay the settlements to that damn Glump kid. One kid gets stuck in a pipe and you damn near lose your business.

So, there are 36 golden tickets? How many packs are there? Wonder what the odds are?

Why this isn't illegal gambling is beyond my understanding.

I haven't looked into it, but probably no purchase necessary, and therefore not considered gambling.

Its not considered gambling since there are other cards in the pack, just like when Topps had their President signatures inserted 1 every gazillion packs. Or any other card company burying the 1 of 1 shiny glossy jersey/autograph insert of the current superstar. Its all a lottery, and a legal one at that.

I beleive with most to all modern trading cards, a person can mail his or her name and address to potentially win an insert. This info is printed on the outside of most packs.

From what I read from someone else this is how it works.
(taken from a poster on beckett.com)

Uncovering the Grand Treasure

Inserted randomly into the product will be 9 CLASS OF ‘36 Diamond Treasure Ticket redemption cards which make the finder eligible to uncover the Grand Treasure.
No Purchase Necessary-1 entry will be randomly selected from the NO PURCHASE NECESSARY mail-ins at the same odds as the 9 randomly inserted redemption cards. The entrant will receive the 10th Diamond Treasure Ticket.
Diamond Tickets will feature the images of the 10 CLASS OF ‘36 Vintage Trading Cards that will be presented at the GRAND TREASURE CEREMONY.
Diamond Ticket redemptions must be received by TRISTAR no later than June 11, 2006.
All Diamond Ticket holders who have redeemed the ticket will be flown to Pittsburgh, PA on July 11, 2006 for the GRAND TREASURE CEREMONY.
The odds of uncovering the T206 Wagner is based on the number of Diamond Tickets redeemed. In the unlikely event that all 10 Diamond Treasure Tickets are not redeemed, the T206 Wagner will still DEFINITELY be uncovered and presented to a collector.
At the GRAND TREASURE CEREMONY each Diamond Treasure Ticket Holder will reach into a LARGE treasure chest and pull out a sealed envelope and take their place on stage.
Once all ticket holders have pulled an envelope, the moment has arrived.
All at once, the ticket holders will open their envelopes and reveal what they have uncovered. Inside the envelope will be an oversized card featuring the CLASS OF ‘36 Vintage Trading Card the ticket holder has found. One will be the Grand Treasure - T206 Wagner. This ticket holder is the Grand Treasure Recipient.
All other ticket holders will be presented with the Class of ‘36 Vintage Card featured on their oversized card.

Hi there, out of curiosity I bought a box of these cards. Surprised at what I found in packs example, 1996 Topps Randy Johnson Topps Lazer insert, 1993 Upperdeck Bruce Hurst, 1981 Topps Coca Cola advertising card, 1981 Coca Cola/Topps Jim Bibby and 1992 Leaf Joel Johnson, basically a bunch of junk older common cards in each pack. 1 autograph card in a separate envelope, 2000 Team Best rookie Brett Myers. Odds of getting 1 of the Class of 36 tickets are 1:1,111,111 whoa! Looks like this is a way to sell off a bunch of common cards from different companies that would not sell otherwise. There are other inserts at lower odds but I don't think anyone on this board is probably interested in those. I would think once collectors see their 1st pack, sales will drop dramatically. I would definitely call this gambling because not much else in these packs. I can't see anything on the packs or box indicating what type of cards are included. It just says 5 licensed cards in pack.

Just info

Joe

"GRAND TREASURE CEREMONY" - that is funny! Even if this card is given out which in reality is not going to happen, it would be "a friend of the family" or something like that. These events are basically never reviewed by a reputable accounting/auditing firm that could verify the validity of the prize and the randomness of the person getting the prize. So the thought of anyone buying these packs of actually receiving any t206 Wagner is a joke.

Even with a reputable firm handing it, look at what happened with McDonalds and it's Monopoly game. All the major winning pieces were being stolen by insiders at the printing plant where the game pieces were manufactured and then distributed to friends and relatives. Everyone from security gaurds to high level employees were involved. So you'll excuse me if I have little faith in promotions like this.

Jay

I like to sit outside drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home I would be arrested, so I go to baseball games and fit right in.

But the folks at Tri-Star are as honest as they come. So far, every one of their big prizes has been won by a legit collector. I have known Jeff, Bobby, Mandy, etc. for more than 10 years each now.

So, before you lump them with every big company -- understand that they understand their hobby status and would not mess it up for this.

Regards
Rich

I don't doubt you but I'll doubt them unless they have an independent accounting firm completely audit and fully supervise the drawing. This is a lot of money here and if they are really willing to give away a t206 Wagner, then they can easily afford to have an outside auditing firm involved. So unless they do this - you can believe them if you want to, but I won't.
