Does anyone know the reason why the Anson (uniform) is so rare? Why was it only issued in 1888? How many are in private hands? I have heard anywhere from 3 to 6.

There are no known "real" Cap Anson jerseys in the industry
The one that was in Halper's Sotheby's auction was fake (as were most if not all of the 19th century HOF jerseys in the sale)
It sold for around $90,000 (a real one was then and would now sell for far more) and was later returned by the buyer for a refund

The number of 19th century Hall of Fame jerseys in the hobby can be counted on one hand
The only real one I can recall at the moment is the John Montgomery Ward NY Giants that was originally in the old Wolffer's auction (how ironic) and recently sold in Hunt's
In fact real 19th century major league baseball jerseys are incerdibly rare
Th only ones I can recall are two or three Dummy Hoy's from the 1890's and a Fred Lake Boston which was from 1900 (not even technically 19th century)

I think people have been misguided in this area and the record needs to be set straight
Josh

Thats great info Josh but i think he was referring to Old Judge Anson cards picturing him in uniform as opposed to ones showing him in street clothes

I am sorry for any confusion. I am referring to the Old Judge Anson uniform card versus the "street clothes" version.

Josh 1900 is part of the 19th century. The 20th century didn't start until 1901. Just like the new millenium didn't start until 2001, contrary too all the celibrating that went on in 2000.

I am glad it took a mistake (thinking you were talking about the jerseys not the card) to get this out into the open

I have heard about the fake uniforms in the Halper auction. What is the entire story behind that? How many were fake? Any idea where Halper got them from?

It is common knowledge that many of them came from Pug Winkler out of California

Are they old jerseys for which fake provenance was created? Or were they recently manufactured, then aged? I think you meant the latter, but I still would like more info - it would be good to know what to look out for when buying old jerseys.

I wonder what kind of provenance was supplied for each uniform? (e.g: "bought directly from family", "bought from mysterious person who was close friend of family - they prefer to avoid publicity so will remain anonymous").

Whatever the provenance was, it was good enough for both Halper and Sotheby's - that's what is disturbing, and why Robert's "mission" to require authenticators to perform due diligence, is so important.
