How do we know what we know?

In going through some older threads (what else to do on a rainy, windy Monday evening?), I've come across discussions of discoveries. That got me to thinking--is there any place that has collected information to support card issuers, dates. etc? For example, here's Iggy's post about the origins of W553s:

Then there's the discovery of the "camera" that W555s came with:

I read lots of catalog descriptions that say a certain issue is "believed to be" this or "purported to be" that. It would be useful to name the source for the belief, but that seldom happens.

There are plenty of other mysteries that have been solved, and plenty yet to be solved.
