Default Spalding Spiral Palm Glove

I knew this glove would bring some serious coin but wasn't expecting $7,700!

What we have here is a super rare example of a Spalding Tornado palm fielders glove. I expected this glove to sell for at least the amount it sold for. I thought it may even surpass five figures. The rarity of the glove and its condition appeal to serious glove collectors and those who can afford to buy it. There is only one other example that I know of.

Same here... that other Tornado Palm example is pictured in the Smithsonian Baseball Book. This one was in terrific condition, with no significant detractors. Someone really got a gem (and paid accordingly!)

Maybe someone on the Vintage Glove Forum got it... think I'll go over there, just to check. I bet there's already a lengthy thread about it.

A very nice Crescent Pad also sold today, for over $2K (big day for Gloves on Ebay!)

Here's the "Tornado Palm" in it's original glory, from the 1924 Spalding equipment catalog. There's no better glove name for marketing purposes than "Fielders' Choice"! It was their top of the line, most expensive professional model. Production lasted three years, from 1924-1926.

Default Just an ok return

If you purchased the glove in a store in 1925 for $10 and sold it today for $7,000, your return would be about 8% per annum.

Sorry, I see the glove sold for $7,700--that would increase the return to 8.1%....

I have a feeling that if this glove ever comes up for sale again, its current owner will do better than 8.1%.

Lucky bastards....

If I found it, I would have had a real dilemma over whether to sell or keep it. It's a once in a lifetime piece.

Years and years ago, I swear I remember seeing one of these for sale at National Pastime on Main Street in Cooperstown. I was just a young kid then, but remember the outrageous price on the glove and the interesting design it had.
