Anyone pick up anything nice? I hated bowing out on the 1907 Tigers cabinet - what a beautiful team photo!

Happy to pick this up - looks like an early baseball cabinet of a California team. Kind of unusual:

As for me about 2 weeks ago I had $26,000 in placed leading/winning bids, about $24/25K more than I could afford, but figured I hang on to win one.

Phil, that's a H-U-G-E piece. I throw a bid in each time it comes up, but I never come close. Great pick-up.

It's a tradition now for Ben to unknowingly knock me into second on a big piece. Cobb slid right out of my grasp. I feel like I got kicked in the bag.

BONUS!!! I just love the image but this surely doesn't hurt the value. Being a card guy as a kid and having a weird, freaky memory for images(probably a curse), I am surprised I didn't recognize this.. then again... maybe I did subconsciously.. moo hoo hoo ha ha ha

I won the the one on ebay. I was waiting to get to post it as a pick up, but, as you noted, it doesn't have the box. I'm very happy with the one I got, at least until a better condition example comes along that is reasonably priced.

I am OK with paying what I did, as it is from Mark Cooper's collection and you really rarely see these come up for sale. I will be glad to post the box lid Mark when I receive it.

Ben,
It was a 1926 hunting photo of Cobb and his bird dog. The photo had sentimental value to the buyer as he hunted with Cobb during his childhood. I hated to let it go but it obviously it is where it belongs. He sent me a note with the payment which was very cool and signed in that familiar green ink. He recently published a book titled Heart of a Tiger which is about growing up with Cobb. I haven't read it yet but plan on doing so in the near future.

I won the Watermans album with the Bobby Jones autograph for a good price, otherwise I got shot down.

Scott, I owned that cabinet once upon a time, I think around 2007 and sold it to a board member.

Ben, that is the nastiest base I have ever seen that Cobb is sliding into.

It is a kick ass..dirty ass base like they were in the good old days. Not ones now that are replaced every game so Steiner can have some idiot sign and charge 500 dollars a pop haha .. I love it/detail.

I have to admit that I just kept studying the base when I first looked at it.
Correct or not, I came to the conclusion that the base was covered with dirt for one of two reasons:

1) Cobber was asked to do a photo shoot of him sliding (attacking) 3rd base with his signature slide and he had done several takes for the photographer to get exactly the right photo composition.

2) Dirt was piled on the base to hold it in place when Cobb shredded it for the shoot.

Any thoughts??

Funny.. I thought the same thing as it relates to your number 1... I do not think 2 is true as how much weight would it even bring? That is not going to hold down enough. I studied the base like a mo fo too... interesting as it appears to be the focus of the photo(sliding area) hence the title on back?? It appears the photographer literally was showcasing his slide technique.
It is just such a cool photo and am really happy with it. It is one of those photos I keep on looking at.

The Cobb photo is outstanding, but I am confused as to how it received a "Type 1" designation.

It is my understanding that a "Type 1" photo was made from the original negative, which is how I have used the term.

However that particular print was made from a copy neg, which you can tell because of the white marks in the corners. Those white circular marks are where the original photo was tacked down while a mounted camera was used to take a photo of it to produce an additional negative. Sometimes you will see about a 1/4" wide white line where instead of a tack, they used as a long fastener to secure the original photo. I had a book at one time that showed the process. I am guessing based on the type of paper that it was printed at the time, just from a copy neg instead of the original.

I don't have the book handy that describes how PSA determines "types" of photos, but I would think that it would be something other than a "type 1". Maybe there is no classification for a print made from a copy neg. Maybe they just assume that anything that is printed directly from a negative is "type 1". It seems like there should be some distinction though.

I am not trying to rain on anybody's parade that has photos like this, as I have seen other similar ones that are described as "type 1" sold as such, I just don't understand how they get that designation.

The explanation is simple, Scott: The PSA grader had no idea whatsoever what those white circles are. Just another example of the total lack of knowledge and experience of PSA "professionals."

Runscott: I think u need to adjust the second photo. Imaginary wall stuff is great, but I'd be afraid someone would sit on that Random Sol White guide, I think that's what it is

Curious..why would you not contact Henry first before posting if you have a working relationship with him? It is clear you were unsure Nd he would be the most qualified to answer as he is the authenticator. Those circles do not look like photographs of objects - they look like negatives of objects, meaning they look like weights/clamps used to hold down a negative.

Ben, I was really not trying to call your photo out in particular, my observation was a general one. The photo that you won just caught my attention as one of the first items in this thread. Your photo is killer, I don't think that anybody would deny that, I don't care if it was printed in 1910 or 1950, it is still a photo that any baseball photo collector would want to own.

I am not really in contact with Henry much, it has probably been two or three years since we have cooresponded. He wrote to me after you contacted him. Besides, I had no way of knowing if Henry had seen this photo or not.

I have not heard back from Henry, but bascially his explaination was that the white marks are caused by the holder used when developing the print from the glass plate negative. Since it appears that he was the one that looked at it in person, I assume that he is correct in this case.

I have seen copy negs that were produced using the process that I described earlier, which would explain the existence of glass plate copy negs. Also, both processes would explain why the marks were there in the first place.

Since none of us were there when the print was developed, we can only go on the evidence in front of us and past experience, and in that we can have different opinions and come to different conclusions.
