Just got these in today....a couple of Lincoln Athletics from 1948 -Ed Boehm and Al Bower...nobodies in the larger scheme of baseball, but pure gold to me.





Here's an interesting item from the 1958 Amarillo Gold Sox - just how precarious was it running a minor league team in the late 1950's? Proof how hard it was to keep a team running....and Amarillo led the league in attendance in 1958, the final year for the Western League.

PCGS will grade baseball currency? Seems odd since they were coupons and not really currency. Still way cool...I would love to have that Deadwood, SD currency that sold last year.

I love the those old A's jerseys. I understand that many of the old major league jerseys would make their way down to the low minors. I knew a guy who played briefly for a lowly Cardinals farm club in the late 50s. He kept his old jersey, and in it was stitched with the name of its original owner, Brooks Lawrence, who pitched for the Cards in the mid-50s ...

Yeah, I wish I could find one of those old A's jerseys. I read somewhere that Connie Mack did outfit his minor league clubs with old Major League jerseys which means if I ever do find that style of jersey it will probably cost me much more than if it was only associated with Lincoln, but on the other hand just finding that style jersey could fit my collection even if it was never worn by a Lincoln player.

edited to add: Brock that bat does look a little small, but Boehm looks like he might have been a pretty big dude.

Nice stuff Joe....did you happen to notice the Farnam, NE uniform that sold on ebay last night? Came with quilted pants!!! Our own Bert Wright won it - I layed off it when I saw Bert was bidding on it and I think he got a pretty good deal.

I only have one Nebraska town team uniform - got this in a trade with a board member. Has Spalding tags - I think circa 30s considering prohibition ended in 1933.

I sure did notice the Farnam NE uniform. I was an under bidder at $313.33. Luckily someone bid more so I didn't impact Bert. I think he did get a good deal.

Bert - would love to see better pics of the uni when you get it.

Dan - If you post a pic of the Spalding tag in your Crete uni I may be able to help date it for you...or you can look in my tags database and see if you see the tag there. The database only goes up until the mids 30s, but I have other records of tags post 1930 too.

Hey guys. I will try to remember to post better pics of the Farnam uniform when I get it. It's hard for me to turn down pre 1930s Nebraska or Colorado baseball stuff...especially when it's as unique as that uniform. However, knowing me and my propensity for moving things on to get something else Joe or Dan will probably end up with it eventually.

Here are a few of my recent pickups

a 1929 Spalding football that is a trophy ball from a game between Haverford College and University of Delaware. The ball actually has a panel that is difficult to make out but says: To Coach, and has several players signatures



Haven't received this pennant yet, but this is a 1940's Eagles pennant that I recently won.



And finally picked up this assorted group of old sports matchbooks. I picked it up because I recognized the 1948 Eagles matchbook in the group that has an image of Steve Van Buren on it. I haven't received the lot yet, and am interested in seeing what the others are - I can't tell what some are in the photo, other than the Diamonds.

More of an off-topic pickup, but also picked up this 1907 Bowling Cabinet photo recently at an estate auction. It is taken in the basement of a popular club in Philadelphia. Pretty neat photo, but bowling ain't my thang, so I put it up on ebay last night.

Funny there should be a couple of posts about matchcovers. I collected matchcovers of all kinds for many years, eventually amassing half a million of them! Matchcovers, even vintage ones, are fairly cheap, aside from a select rare few. The Diamond Match Co. baseball/football/hoceky issues of the early 1930's are actively collected. Covers with the strikers struck (even lightly) are considered to be that hobby's equivalent of a "PSA 1/SGC 10", although I never minded them as much as other collectors did. Also, covers with the strikers cut off (matchcover lingo ---> "bobtailed") have no collector value. It's actually a pretty fun hobby which reached its peak in the 1940's-50's and has tailed off since then. The largest club, RMS, boasts over 4000 active members, and there are lots of local/specialty groups of enthusiasts. It was a great hobby for me in that I learned a heck of a lot about regionalized business history. Another nice feature is that trading is still emphasized over selling (mostly on a "one-for-one" basis). I lost my interest over ten years ago, but still retain one of the largest collections ever assembled. That being said, anyone out there want 500,000 matchcovers?!?!?!

Keith... I have always loved that Eagles Pennant. I don't collect very much football, but do have a few of the nicer Pennants, Hartlands and Kail statues of various teams.

Your Eagles Pennant really has that military look to it... very regal and unlike any of their other logos over the years. I bet it was manufactured during WW2 or shortly thereafter. Thanks for posting...

And here's a snapshot of what I think may be a c1920 Philly player -written on the back is "Jack Miller" is this Dots Miller?
