Default Oakland A's and the Elephant

Posted By: Scott

While watching the Red Sox game last night with my wife, she asked why the A's have a logo of an elephant on their sleeves. I wasn't sure, but thought it had it's roots with the Philadelphia A's. Does anyone have any information on this?

Thanks in advance.

I do believe it was John McGraw, who called Connie Mack's A's "White elephants" before the 1905 World Series.

Apparently the Oakland A's feel they're the "White Elephants" too. Maybe they were in the Charles O'Findlay (sp.) days, but not anymore.
Thank you to those who responded.
Scott.

The elephant was replaced with a mule as the A's mascot by Charlie Finley in 1963. I always wondered if this had anything to do with Finley's politics. The elephant was restored in 1986. For a time, the A's featured a modernized angry elephant with sunglasses, but thankfully, they've gone back to the more traditional elephant of Connie Mack's day ...
