A fine copy of the 1939 Leo Durocher Play Ball arrived in the mail today.

The back of the card, which includes Leo's biography, is interesting because
his position is listed as Playing Manager.

The question is what other baseball cards of playing managers were
produced (and when)? Did any of the card companies list the phrase
"Playing Manager" anywhere on the card?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Best,

....was a playing-manager (I think the youngest), who managed the Cleveland Indians at a young age
of 24; and, played SS at the same time till 1950.

This fact is reflected on the backs of his early BOWMAN cards and I think also on his 1949 LEAF card.

Bruce,
Can you post a scan for the board to check out your card?

Bucky Harris was a player manager of the Senators in the 20's through at least the 30's. Fred Clarke was also a player manager with the Pirates and maybe earlier with Louisville. I believe there were several others from the turn of the century up through the 20's.

I think if you go through all the bios on the backs of T205, some of them refer to player/manager, but I don't recall which ones.

Pete Rose's 1986 Topps has him listed that way. I loved that card as a kid as I suspected the player-manager designation was probably something I'd never see again. So far...

Player Managers were very common in the 1900-1930 era.

Many players did this and many Hall of Famer managed during their playing days at some time or another.
Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, George Sisler, Bucky Harris, Eddie Collins, Dave Bancroft, Rabbit Maranville, Rogers Hornsby, Ray Schalk, Bill Mckechnie, Roger Bresnahan, Three Finger Brown, Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, Frank Chance, Nap Lajoie, Joe Kelley, Jimmy Collins, Bobby Wallace, Fred Clarke, and even Honus Wagner and Cy Young managed while still playing.

But as far as a card noting this, there are some in the 1920s.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Cobb has 2 different E121's. One list him as outfielder and the other list him as Mgr.

I believe the Holland card of Bucky Harris lists him as "Second Base - Manager" or "Manager - Second Base."

Nellie Fox is listed as 2B-Coach and I believe Berra is listed as C-Coach and Spahn as P-Coach.

Bruce,
The back of Marty Marion's 1951 Bowman says shortstop and manager, as I recall. I'll dig him out and post his scan tomorrow, unless someone beats me to that. And I think Cobb and Speaker in W512 both have a version that says ex-manager, after they both joined the Athletics following their gambling mess. And there's bound to be a Goudey back that has something like that... maybe Hornsby, but I don't have a Goudey Hornsby to check that. Just says that he bats right on the back of his Diamond Star card.

Frank.

Leo's rival Mel Ott (he of Leo's paraphrased "nice guys finish last" quote) was player/manager of the Giants from 1942-47, full-time player until 45. His 46-47 Cuban Propagandas Montiel lists him as Manager, bio refers to his playing.

Here is another Cobb where he is "listed" as a playing manager.

Zach, I've said it before and I'll say it again - those cards are among the coolest cards I've ever seen.

Sorry to hijack, I just love looking at those.

Marty Marion, 1951 Boman, and realistically as much of a player in his day as those new york area short stops that made the Hall.

He was never a manager but his 1964 Topps card lists him as a pitcher/coach.

3 more player manager cards, all Goudeys, 1933 Terry, 1934 Frisch and `934 Grimm. My Terry looks too nice for my collection, guess I should slab him and sell him, buy a replacement with the proceeds, and spend the extra on more cards.

What tickles me is that Durocher played for St. Louis, the Frisch and Marion cards are with St. Louis, and Grimm grew up in St. Louis. Terry must have a connection.

Ted Z mentioned Lou B, and his 1951 Bowman card has him as a player manager. And I'm starting to think that Bruce's post was designed to keep me busy searching for such cards, anyone else gonna post a car image?

Guys,

I remember cards of Pete Rose as a player-manager. Was Pete the last player-manager. If not, who was.

Peter
