Default OT - But Another PSA Question

Posted By: Richard Simon

On June 7th an ebay auction was started for a baseball purportedly signed by Joe DiMaggio (auction #5206467320). The baseball had an "In The Presence" COA from PSA, meaning a PSA representative had witnessed the signing.
During the auction, a potential buyer submitted the auction ad to PSA for a "Quick Opinion," which came back "unable to render opinion." This despite the fact that the ball was supposedly "witnessed" by a PSA representative, as indicated by the advertised COA. (The COA was pictured in the auction ad, as was the sticker on the baseball. They had matching ID numbers, 1A 37058).
The buyer states that he was puzzled: PSA cannot authenticate a signature that they supposedly witnessed.
The buyer says he confronted the seller, who appeared to be as puzzled as the potential buyer. The buyer claims he has emails showing that the seller contacted PSA, which stated that (a) there are some “problems” with some of the COAs, and (b) PSA would purchase the ball.
The seller ended the auction early and promptly removed all pictures from his ad.
Did Joe DiMaggio sign this baseball in the presence of PSA?
Did he sign any baseballs in the presence of PSA?
Are there other such “problem” COAs?

Default OT - But Another PSA Question

Posted By: Jim Hoffman

In the July 1 issue of SCD (page 57), there is an advertisement from an attorney seeking potential clients regarding PSA/DNA and authenticity.

The ad says, "If you reside in Ohio, have purchased an item through an auction that was authenticated by PSA/DNA, and have doubts about the item's authenticity given PSA/DNA's recent announcement, please contact" followed by the attorney's contact information.

I haven't seen this ad before. Richard, do you know anything about this? I don't know what the "recent announcement" is. Spence's leaving? The "cursory review" stuff and upgradeable LOAs? Is there something else going on with them besides those two things?

This is all very interesting!

Richard, spaces are limited for the 2005 PSA/DNA Authenticating competition at this year's National. $2,500 for first prize and you never know, they may even hire you!

BCD: Who is Adam? Is this just another one of your inside jokes?

The "recent announcement" refers to the auction house LOA story that PSA changed two or three times. It has nothing to do with Jimmy Spence leaving.
I believe this attorney is starting a class action lawsuit against PSA, I am not quite sure of the grounds.
That would make at least three outstanding lawsuits against PSA at this moment, that I am aware of - Bill Daniels, Bill Miller and this new one.
Joe Orlando will be one busy boy.
In my opinion this contest is simply a diversionary tactic to get the public's mind off all of PSA's recent troubles.
I am not knowledgable on most current autographs, which is one reason I would not enter. The other reason I would not enter is who has decided what is authentic and what is not, of the autographs in the contest. Who is to say that the contest autographs are "tagged" correctly? Joe Orlando? Steve Grad? Zack Rullo?
In addition they are giving you 30 autographs to examine in 10 minutes, maybe that is the way PSA authenticates, but that is not how I authenticate.
And in regard to being "hired" by them, once is enough .
