Default New Member 1st Post - R423 Baseball Issue - DATE CHANGE

Hey Guys,

Was thinking about what to post first and other than my introduction, this being my first official post and as an hobby historian, I feel that I will share some of my other information opposed to the hockey that I specialize in.

The R423 gumball issue is documented as 1950, however it was first released in May of 1952.

Maybe this information is out there but just in case, so they were produced by Oak (Penny King) through charm gumball machines.

Default R-423

These are a very neat item.I purchased a bunch of these this spring.Only had one complete strip. But I notice that even thought these appear to have been released before the hockey item that was similar, they do not carry anywhere near the resale value that the hockey does.Any thought of why this may be the case.

Welcome Bobby. Very interesting item.

I live in San Antonio but grew up in St Louis, a baseball town, so am also a long suffering Blues follower.

Have made a couple of trips to your country, but mostly the far eastern and western areas

Default Cool Info

Hi and welcome to the boards

Although not particularly attractive, I find r423's fascinating.

There is a good thread on this issue here:

That advertisement piece sure is cool. I'm curious as to how are you dating the issue at 1952?

It has the date on the piece at the top page but I cropped it down, so the date is 1952, the Movie TV stars came out just after that and the hockey in the fall. I have documented all the hockey players but not all the strips. For this post, I was just setting the record straight on the Date being 1952 opposed to the 1950 date the hobby has on it. Just setting history straight, good luck changing it with PSA.

Any insight as to the color variations of the back? Would these have been released at different times or all at once?

Does anyone happen to have a r423 Jackie Robinson they are willing to part with?

Been hunting for one for 5 years and no dice. Willing to pay a premium!

PSA won't change things even when they are absolutely 100% wrong. Case in point the 1917 Marquard stamp they label as Ruth and which PSA dealers are lemmings and selling as Ruth, even when shown the absolute proof it is NOT Ruth. There is one idiot dealer on ebay who has one up on a BIN and after I told him and showed him it wasn't Ruth, he told me if PSA said it was Ruth then it's Ruth. Idiocy at it's best. Even when I showed him the place the picture came from. Personally I think it is almost fraud.

Maybe if we could get the Babe to wearily get out of his grave, float to the guy's office, grab him by the neck and tell him it's not him in the picture, the knucklehead would admit to the truth....nah, probably not.
